I needed a pair of navy pads for white ball cricket. Found this thread and decided to give it a go. Here's my efforts using the VHT cloth/vinyl dye mentioned above and a couple of coats of VHT clear coat. Bought it all on eBay. Pads are a couple of years old and very well worn.
Taping up the backs was the hardest bit and you need to take time over this of you want a really tidy job. I sprayed them in the garden so didn't worry too much about making a mess. First coat was fairly light. Second coat applied 10 minutes later and final coat after an hour. Was told not to spray too close so did it from about 12" away. Touch dry in an hour and cured in a couple of days. I then applied 2 light coats of clear coat lacquer. End result looks pretty good and finish seems very tough. All in cost less than £15.

£15 materials, £800's worth of tape!

Looks good though, don't mind the shiny finish, dazzle the bowler on his run up.

Should have used a matt lacquer rather than a clear coat, they'll be blinding in the sun. But top job :)

Update - the lacquer cracks when the pads bend. Should have used a flexible lacquer instead or just left them with the matt paint finish because that doesn't crack. Doesn't look too bad a the cracks disappear when the pads go back to normal shape.

Been asked a few times about the paint I used. It's this

VHT SATIN VINYL & CLOTH SEAT & CARPET PENETRATING DYE

Readily available on eBay and Amazon

I don't recommend using the lacquer as it doesn't stretch and will crack. The vinyl paint flexes nicely and looks good in a matt finish.

I tried this but found that the vinyl spray does crack a touch, miles better than ordinary pray paint but not as good as anticipated.

I used Plasti-dip, looked awesome, but peels if it tears at the edges. Leaves a white pad if you peel it all off though, as it just sits on the surface.
