Consistantly bowling off cutters..
« on: July 12, 2013, 12:12:34 PM »

For the past 2 and a half years 80% of the balls I bowl are off cutters due to my wrist "sliding" to the right upon release instead of being straight up.

Id like to think im fairly "quick" but iv been told numerous times if I had come to a solution to stop bowling off cutters id have that extra bit of a nip when im bowling.

Anyone else had this problem or a similar one to it?

You could lock your wrist before delivery..that is have it bent backwards in your run up and arm swing...some bowlers do that to stop wrist from sliding..lets hope the pics help explain...

Unlocked/straight wrist- wrist is right behind the seam

Locked wrist - wrist is locked so that the top of your arm swing the palm/ball is facing the sky...wrist will straighten as you swing forward and release and helps in avoiding sliding..

not really come across this before, a video of your action would really help.

Try squeezing the ball a touch harder with your Index finger, that's a preget common way to stop the wrist falling away at the point of delivery.

I also have a similar problem. I don't seem to be able to release the ball with my fingers straight so I loose a bit of pace. Any suggestions on how I can release it straight or is it the same advice as above lads?

I have had this problem. Try running in a little slower and standing nice and tall in your delivery stride. Often when I bowl cutters/scrambled seem every ball it's because I'm falling away thus my body overcompensates by dragging the wrist down not square. When I stand taller and get my arm high I can swing it both ways but when I go for that extra effort and fall away cutters are the end result. Video would be good though

Thanks for the reply's iv not been able to attend many net sessions however iv adjusted my action accordingly in a match and I can definitely see a change now that the seam is straight up and now genuinely swinging the ball.

Im kind of disappointed as I thought that the pace that I can release the ball doesn't seem any different; im just assuming I need to perfect my action to achieve extra pace?

It's most probably due to the looseness of your wrist at the point of release, fix that but remember how to bowl the off-cutter, its a great weapon for a fast bowler.
