Block & Drive
« on: July 31, 2013, 10:12:10 AM »

Seem to be my only two shots..

Iv barely scored any runs this season had one 50* and the rest is not worth mentioning; and this is yet my second rubbish season in a row with the bat.

My biggest problem is when im batting im pre-meditating every shot; for instance when I first go out to bat ill look to play a forward defensive even if iv just be lobbed a full toss; and when roughly into my innings when iv got around 15-20 runs I just look to drive every ball; I mean im playing the shot in my mind before the bowlers even left the ball; so with my trigger movement going forward im missing out on the rank legside balls that should be clearing the rope.
I guess im just lacking confidence in my ability to score in other areas apart from down the ground.

Anyone else suffered from this or anything similar?

I've had similar as I played on low pitches and went up a league and still found myself leaning on the front foot (which it sounds like you are doing). I was getting myself into a bit of trouble and not getting myself in good postions, I was just pressing forward all the time. One things that helped me is saying to myself "wait" as the bowler is letting go. I noticed how much time Trott had to play the ball and he wasn't moving until after the ball was 1/3 of the way down the pitch. So I figured that I could wait a little bit longer and trust I would move quicker to play the ball. I haven't set the world alight but I'm not getting myself into trouble now and i feel a lot more comfortable in the crease.

I'm exactly the same as you at the moment AndyR. I'm premeditating before the bowlers let it go! I'm finding that I've planted my front foot way too early and struggling to play anything that's heading towards the leg side as my front leg is in the way far too frequently.

Thanks for your insight Leddster138 ill give that same strategy a go in the games we have left see how I go?

As has been mentioned earlier really. We had a lad at our club coming forward too early/much and was getting trapped LBW a lot. Set up a training session with him and got him to keep still for longer. Basically we tied a rope round him and held him back! It's worked though, scored 51, 57 and 61* in recent weeks. Key is to keep your head still and upright, stand as tall as you can and follow the line of the ball with your head, the eyes will follow and thus the arms and bat.

People get hung up on technique sometimes. Go in a net and just try and hit every ball. Discover what you can and can't hit for yourself. Then look at keeping the shape in your stroke to control the ball but straight away you will have a natural idea of what you as an individual is able to hit. Everyone is different and finds different things easier to do. Discover for yourself and develop it. Don't get hung up on text book and technique. Paralysis through analysis. Enjoy it

I agree Alfred. Bob woolmer said as much in his book. When interviewed bradman said he was more concerned about where to hit the ball than how to hit it.
