My new Purist first impressions
« on: November 06, 2013, 08:30:04 AM »

Now I'll be the first to admit I a bit sceptical about ordering one of the new Purists, so when Jake posted a nice looking 404 I took a punt as I thought it best not to spend a small fortune.

This bat weighs 2lb10 which is a bit heavier than I'm used to, but the thing that struck me most was the pickup, I'd say with one grip this picks up about 2lb8, so when I've added my extra grips I'm surfeit will pick up like a dream.

The shape itself isn't what I'd been expecting, it was better! A lovely profile with no concaving, great stuff from GM.

Now for the face of the bat. Being a low end bat I wasn't expecting miracles, but Jake has sent me a bat that I can only describe as miraculous for the price!
This only has 6 grains and a small knot on the face, but that's fine for me.

You may notice a couple of blemishes on the face, but I love a bat with character! The one I most liked the look of was the one on the right handlers outside edge, here is a close up.

As the bat has been bleached I'm not certain what it is, but I thought it was possibly a butterfly stain??
If it is or isn't doesn't bother me, the best pinging bat I've owned had a mark the same in virtually the same place, so that can only be a good sign  :D

Apologies for the picture quality, they were taken in bad light with my phone.

You can really find some gem's in the lower end of GM's grading system.

not at all keen on the shape though - all edge and no spine makes Purist a dull boy!

Not knocking the bat but with the Purist name a little less edge and more spine would of been in order. Had this bat been named something else then the profile would of been a winner.

Not done a mallet test yet!

I tapped up an old ball and the sweet spot seemed to be okay, just below the sticker upwards and the bottom 2 inches of the bat are virtually dead (as you'd expect though)

These GMs will lesser grains usually take time to really open up..I had a Halo with lesser grains and felt like a plank for a season...but it really opened up next season.

Without sounding like a party pooper, it looks like a really thin profile, almost stick like. Love to know the spine height.

Love the stickers/decals and the fact that it isn't concaved.

Amazing value!

I'm sure it will perform, regardless of spine height. In that case, the Newbery Tour should be a plank - all about the pressing and the mass of wood present at the middle rather than just the spine height! (Have a Tour I hardly ever use, and have been thinking of selling. The middle on it is just ridiculous though, and I can't bring myself to part with it!)

Hope it goes well for you, I very nearly purchased a Purist myself, but I decided to get a B&S LE, since I use the bottom two inches of the bat more often than I would like! :-[

I don't think this bat is thin or stick like profile.

It's hard to capture the shape in photos as it's quite an unusual shape.

In basic terms it is the zona shape, but more spread out, so the edges and the middle at their peak cover a much bigger area than the ball of mass on the zona.

I did struggle to get a decent picture, it's not a twig by any means, and the shape is a bit funky.
Probably not to everyone's taste but I'm as happy as a pig in ****
