Buzz's DS cricket bat review
« on: November 08, 2013, 08:02:42 PM »

Well it has been a long time coming sorry Buzz but finally i have had a few nets with the DS cricket bat kindly sent to me by Buzz.

Spec

DS CRICKET BAT
15 GRAINS
30MM EDGES AT HIGHEST POINT
58MM SPINE AT HIGHEST POINT
Weight At 2-8 without a grip on.
Blade is 18mm shorter than a normal sh blade.

Had 5 nets with this bat and it is quite a encouraging bat it is getting better and better.

Initially i though the bat was over pressed it had that hard dull feel to hitting a cricket ball off the bat but a gradual build up of bowling machine a bit of mallet work and older balls has done the usual trick and brought the bat to life.

It is a strange shape with a mid to high swell and wood taken from around the toe/ lower quarter of the bat but left with a very thick toe??which does enhance the pick up which i must say is very good and a well balanced bat.

It does play very well indeed more work is required to finish the knocking in process but towards the end of the last net i had it was coming sweetly out of the screws and a decent bat it it.

It is funny i do not really rate bats that much any more because i find 90 per cent are very similar in performance and this bat i was pleasantly surprised at the rebound quality it has.

The finish of the bat was decent but soon the shin wore off in the bat sock i use but it is a nicely shaped bit of wood from a lad who i rate after he worked on one of my B3 bats.

It is a grade 2 in the face it has a couple of blemishes on the face but has lovely grains both front and back.

I guess it early days for Dom but he seems to be doing very well locally and a few on here we indeed are lucky to have a couple of people like him and Ryan around doing great things (sorry i know there are others but these are the 2 i have used).

The bat comes in just above average for me it will be a decent bat it a no thrills kind of bat not overly big for it weight or punchy but you get the feeling the under hood could just get better and better.

Sorry about picture quality it is a rather nice bat

Good review. The few pictures of DS's bats I've seen look good. I like the slightly offset edge and minimal concaving and this one has good looking grains.
The more bats he makes, the better he will get, order now before he commands a £500 fee for a G1 :D

glad you have enjoyed having a hit with the bat, it is lovely. very well balanced.

being 6 ft 1 I struggled a bit with the shorter blade in my stance.

The bat is now in my possession and initial reports are impressive. Will do a proper review when i get some time.

very funny :)

actually I thought it would be good for a few different people to have a go with it so they can see the quality of Dom's work. plus this way it gets knocked in for me!

Nice theory, anyone else willing to donate a bat to be used to demonstrate the quality of a forum bat maker??  ;)

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who lends out bats so they get knocked in, I like the lend new ones to a mate or one of the colts for a season to play it in, saves a lot of time doing it that way  ;)

How very dare you! Dogs are very different! For a start they are cute when puppies! Another difference is they strive to please their owner and can look beautiful when grown up. Also they are loyal and will not go a bonk with every other Pratt around! And dogs are only occasionally on heat. whereas she looks as if she always is!!

And lastly a dog is for life and not just for Christmas!  ;)

Hello chaps, i've had 3 good sessions with this bat now.

My initial impression on the bat was: nice shape, very similar to my Laver Reserve, grains i thought were very attractive but i was a little underwhelmed because as Dave eludes to, the size of the bat is quite unimpressive, especially compared to my Laver (left of picture) which is less than 1 ounce heavier.

That being said, the pickup is very nice, and size isn't everything ;)

Initial thoughts when tapping up with a ball were that this bat made a very rich sound, the middle felt forgiving but of course the proof would be actually using it.

I think Dave had maybe got through the hard period and softened this up for me, as i don't think this felt hard during use, i was able to lean on shots nicely and felt comfortable with this bat immediately. There was a satisfying solidity to timing a shot, and whilst i agree with Dave there isn't that wow factor in terms of punch/ping, it is by no means a dead bat. The slightly higher middle and light weight made back foot shots a dream to execute. I would happily use this bat now i have moved club and no longer play on a low bouncing pudding.

This bat is good evidence to show that the size of a bat isn't everything, the performance was very nice indeed, i still think i would feel more comfortable with something a little bit more imposing when i am at the crease, but i can't knock this little belter. :)

I like the graphics, and although used, i could tell this bat was finished nicely. Classy, understated stickers, following similar templates to my Laver (shield on the front, with a basic splice cover on the back enhanced by a bit of flair from the tree) which get a thumbs up.

Who will be next to wield this?
