Perhaps because his game was based so much on timing the ball instead of whacking it he liked to have a heavier bat to get value for his shots.

We need to admire his abilities, facing top fast bowlers around the world with a bat that heavy. He has faced both pacers & spin bowlers throughout his career and has played a lot of cricket around the world (and just not in Asia).

True!! He has played the liked of Wasim, Waqar, Shoiab, Bret Lee and so many other quick bowlers..takes special talent. Like someone said, its all about the comfort.

I think one thing to consider is the strong wrists some of these pro's.if you have ever seen robin smith or hick up close they have very strong wrists.
You rarely see thin wrists us clubbies have with the pros.
Dravid would be different as he's a slim guy but his game was very different to sachins.
Someone like ms dhoni is a immensly strongly built guy.
The modern pros all work on upper body strength you can see just by looking at most of the england side.even cook is full of muscles in the upper arms

Strong wrists, surely that means all the under 15s would use a 3lb bat??

I don't want to sound like a cynic, more of a general question. Why would he need to use bats that big? I understand the whole point that a heavier bat makes the ball go further but Don Bradman used a bat that weighed 2lb5oz and was much more prolific. Is it likely that Tendulkar's reputation for being one of the best batsmen of all time is helped out by having a rediculously heavy bat helping him out? And if so is he really as good as people think or is he aided by these bats?

That is a ludicrous statement. If that was true, we'd all be using 4lb bats and playing Test cricket on a Saturday. The weight of a bat has absolutely no direct correlation to the number of runs scored.

It wasn't a statement, it was a question. I was merely asking whether or not the use of a heavier bat aided him in making him a more dangerous batsman.

It would have aided him as much as it aids you or I using our preferred weight of bat I would have thought. He could probably outscore me using a toothpick or a sledgehammer.

Not the bat. It's the person who's holding it. Think that's fair to say.

Can someone confirm why are we trying to analyse whether someone who has got 25,000 first class and 22,000 one-day runs should have used a lighter bat or that the heavier bat made him a more dangerous batsman !

Curious discussion really! I'm in no way saying he's not a world class player. I was simply asking is it plausible that he has gained alot of advantage from these bats. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it and not doubting his talent.

I think maybe the best way to describe it is that heavy bats were best for him just like a light bat may be best for someone else.

wouldn't be custom bats forum if it wasn't the bats that got him 25,000 runs and not the player :D
