I just can't understand why as a professional you wouldn't kit yourself out with the very best protective equipment available

You prob should explain only certain models of the Masuri and GN will mate in the Vision Series and the new GN that Cook/Bairstow/Plunkett etc are wearing.

Ok so after doing some research, here's my final two in my price rage: Masuri Vision Series Elite and Adidas Adipower.

Any suggestions, thoughts, inputs?

Are we more careful as amateurs because we have day jobs to think about? Does Kieswetter still get paid while recovering from his injuries? Not that I'm suggesting he's less careful about his safety because he gets paid to play, but if he doesn't have to worry about getting to the office on Monday...

I know I am - I spend a lot of time meeting potential clients and driving - that's why I always wear a helmet (Ayrtek) and top end batting gloves.  A good example is a colleague who's just returned from a cricket tour with a black eye (mid-range older helmet, ball went between grill and peak).  We have a Royal event tomorrow where we are manning the VIP tent - he'll be in a suit with a huge black eye...

You have to take into account the day job, in my opinion.  For what its worth if Kieswetter's said "no thanks, I'll stick with my tried and trusted" as his employer now I'd be asking him to explain why Somerset should pay him a full wage.  That said, its possibly their fault for not insisting all employees wear the new standard lids...

You'd also find that there will be a requirement to have insurance in place for all players in professional sport to cover injuries that make them unavailable to play, which of course those of us playing at an amateur level don't have...

But I agree, I wear what I consider to be exceptional protection because, much as I love playing, I still have to make a living a different way.

I had been thinking about going back to batting in my sun hat...!

Id take hard over floppy when it comes to safety personally :)

Coincidentally we had an order from the ECB come in last night so it seems to have rattled a few cages with helmet safety a hot topic. There were 2 incidents in local cricket that i think might have a few people thinking about wearing a helmet too now. One top edge and egg for Cordys lot and one broken jaw for Biggy B's Minehead boys.

As much as I do look on enviously at team mates and opposition batting in caps (never sun hats, who knows why?! Has to be the head gear of choice if not a helmet...), I've promised myself I'll always wear one.

Its not just protection from the bowler.  Most I've heard about have been top edges into the face when hooking or pulling and even sweeping.  For me, there are too many factors out of a batsmen's control.

I see he's out for the whole season, I wore my lid while keeping Saturday, also while batting as pitch lively, looks like the shoe thread show's he's a huge (No Swearing Please) and put vanity over safety, just desserts then.

Its a frustration when the ICC are highlighting to manufacturers and the PCA to the players that injuries are occurring still with older designs so looking to the reputable helmet manufacturers to design something to reduce the risk of such injuries.

Having done so the players are stuck in their ways and would rather wear something that is known to offer lower levels of protection than the newer designs. The fashion over function outlook may now start to sway....perhaps.
