Personal choice. Some people aren't bothered about the aesthetics of a bat some are very particular. I know many guys I used to play county cricket with that would just use any bat that they liked the feel of if it performed but many who were very particular about the grains and the look of their bats. Im not going to tell people something that's a lie to try and sell something as it only comes back to bite you at some point. If its in your budget to buy top end and that's what you like then all well and good like wise if you want lower end price scale that's where you go. I try and cater for everyone, I have been in the position of not being able to afford top end bats and I was chasing a career in cricket and the bat makers I used to go and see looked after me with quality butterfly bats then I was lucky enough to be sponsored as a professional and got the top end for nothing. I have been lucky and appreciate that not everyone is that lucky. I have to be honest I am not a salesman if I was I would be better at marketing the products and I would fill it with jargon and myths, I just enjoy making good bats and trying to make every single one better than the last be it lower or upper end.

except it is your honesty which makes you an excellent salesman.

the quality of your bats also helps a little bit too! ;)

Because people buy for the looks over the performance and will always assume the better it looks the better it is.

I don't think it is just that. Occasionally Paul will point out a cleft that is pretty light for its size, which will obviously produce a big bat for a given weight, which is what tempted me. Had he posted a pic of a butterfly cleft with similar weight (which I believe he has done since) I would have gone for that. I'm really not too bothered about huge numbers of grains or how straight they are.

Which bat-makers did you go and see? (Just out of interest.)

My mate Anthony who is no longer with us great guy used to go to hunts county and pick up some beauties for us, my dad used to nip me over to Duncan fearnley when he was making the great magnum bats as well there were 3 or 4 of us who would go and sort it out whenever we were able as we knew what each other wanted.

Aren't many lower grade bats pressed harder, to last - the assumption being they will be used in lower grade cricket against cheaper, harder balls? Certainly this used to be the case.

Possibly so but I don't I try and press everything to the best that we can. Even our junior bats as we tend to make for young top end players and they want as much performance out of them as possible as they can't hit as hard and no pace on the ball to help them so we make perfect miniatures of the adult bats not these prices of floor board with a handle in that you buy off the shelf in many places for £60 or £70 and wonder why he can't hit it anywhere.
