small face cracks

A retailer phoned up to say a customer purchased a Scorch bat from him and once home he started to knock the bat in only to notice a few very fine cracks running down the face of the bat . It was replaced with out any problems at all and I collected the bat on my next visit . I contacted B&S South Africa and explained the situation as well as sending a few photos there reply back was that this happens regularly it is the result of a mallet hitting willow the willow is softer so something has to give the small cracks are simply the face of the bat opening up and bedding in this is a sign of a very good piece of willow they said to continue the knocking in process and report back. Three weeks down the line I have personally knocked this bat in for at least 12 hours and the end result it is a absolute gun the cracks have not become wider a few smaller ones in length have appeared face cover fitted and ready to go obviously if the cracks deepen to an extent where the performance of the bat is questioned then a full replacement will be issued until then this is a gun bat from the word go . I guess in short on making a purchase from your favourite retailer or direct from the manufacture don't panic ask first if in doubt it could very well be a natural process your bat goes through whilst knocking it in  cheers

Small cracks running down the grains is something you look for, you crave almost.

The poor customer has just let go of a potential belter.

Well it's knocked in now. So slap a scuff sheet on it and sell it on here for one of us to get hold of a beast and a bargain

Well if the split is along grains it is great ... But what if we can see a slight split or widening on sapwood ... Is it ok ?

I stand to be corrected but splitting down sapwood should not pose any problems  I am not sure who you bought your bat off and what there after sales service is like with B&S if the bat develops a fault that is not caused through any fault of your own we either repair or replace with in the season

Apologise for going off topic. I bought a B&S LE bat from a guy last year (on ebay) and he claimed that the bat was used in a couple of nets and it needs some more knocking for match use. My question is does B&S bats take some time to open up?

Hi sorry I have just seen this post you mentioned EBAY I don't like the sound of that always suspicious of bats on there (that's only my view ) in the past  the more the B&S bats are used the better they become of late the factory have improved there pressing technique through the purchase of a new press and most B&S bats ping from the off in general the more work done on the bat from the beginning the better it will play this I am sure applies to all brands so if it is an older model then yes it will get better and better with time

The softer the blade the sooner it will ping. If the face does not crack the blade is to hard and will require more work time with the mallet.

No pics sorry as they are hair line cracks they don't show through the face cover the bat has been knocked in fully now and feels great

To confirm, we sold this bat to a customer. A 2'7 Scorch, a really nice one in terms of pickup and performance. He sent it back as it began to crack parallel to the grains while he was knocking it in. I suggested this was probably the grains opening up (something many on this forum crave) but agreed to replace it anyway if he was still unsatisfied (the customer is always right etc)

For anyone interested, I am happy to have the bat back from Gary to sell as a knocked in and ready to play model at our forum discount price of £180 with free delivery. A saving of £15 on the knocking in, and a further £10 thanks to our forum price being £180 compared to £190 online/in-store.
