Net bat thinking...
« on: March 13, 2014, 08:42:19 AM »

Morning all,

Was sat around last night taking a few ball marks off the GN 1885 808 with some white spirit last night and as having a think about net bats (Rock and Roll... but at least it was a welcome distraction to marking test papers!)

I know some will prescribe to them, some won't, due to a plethora of different reasons but what sort of net bat do you go for?

I personally go for something which is heavier than my match bat but with incredible performance (Right now, it is a performance laminate) because I am a finisher (A bit technique obsessed) and bit of a confidence player.

What do you all go for? Weight-Related? Performance-Related? Exact copy of your match bat?

Many trains of thought on this - what's yours?

A couple of nets seem to do more damage to my bats than a whole season of proper games. For that reason alone I would not use my match bat in a net. I will use a slightly heavier bat for netting but it also depends on whether I feel I need to "play in" a bat.

Also, we have players (Always Sunday 'specialists' at my club...) turn up with the Slaz 'Bat Breakers' at the beginning of the new season.

Not risking a £200-£300 match bat on those.

Depends what you class as a "net"?

If it is indoor, pre-season, then I would use a similarly balanced bat that is not needed as damage can occur.

Outdoor, on an artificial wicket, same bat.

On grass, either my match bat or a bat that needs playing in.

In a match situation. Match bat.

I tend towards the "Use the bat you'd use in a match in the net" simply because no two bats are identical, and the purpose of the net is to familiarise me with all of my parts and movement for use in a game.

Hence, if I was to get a net bat, weight and pick up would need to be as near as possible to those of my match bat. This is something I am currently attempting to do...

  Slaz 'Bat Breakers'

DISLAMER: Other 'bat breaking' balls are available from other companies, not just Slaz. :D

Mainly Slaz....

You listening Slazenger??!!! Stop making cheap balls, filled with cement, for Sports Direct! It will make the ones of us that invest in top quality equipment VERY happy indeed! :D :D

Another brand, Splay, off ebay! I had to explain to a parent how a student's brand new Choice Willow Praetorian LE was smashed in it's second net. Honestly, It was like bowling with a rock...

But back to the net bat discussion! :)

My net bat is a cheap malik lam i picked up from uzi sports.

I tend to warm myself up with it. And if any balls feel rock hard. I tend to start just leaving them.

If all balls are fine(easy to check when passing back) i may switch to a match bat depending.

Bowling machines i tend to switch to match bats, or bats i want to open up/Have some play.

Indoors i also leave yorkers. Hard floor or bat? You know which one is going to give. And it aint the floor.

I go for similar weight as my match bat but a lower grade of willow.

For me weight and pickup is the most important thing, your hands/reflexes get used to a certain weight, don't want to constantly change

the pickup/feel etc. all the time.

Interesting. I use the same theory as a few pros - that using a heavier bat in training/swinging around before going out to bat, improves the pickup of your match bat.

I can see how getting used to the weight of a single style of bat can help some players.

Maybe becomes an issue when you have bats of different sizes and weights for T20, ODI and Test perhaps??

Here's a curve ball for you. If the 10,000 hours of practice is true, then surely it is more effective done using a similar set-up every time in order to absolutely fine tune yourself?

The pros that I know have all used as close to match set-up as possible in nets precisely because they are using nets to groove everything, rather than wasting time on adjusting every time.

Let's take dhoni for instance.

We know he has a 4lb net bat, as mike hussey tweeted about it.

He also switches to a 3lb plus bat for the last few overs off a match.

As he is one of the best finishes out there, I'd say it's working. But is that just because of the raw natural talent in him?

I'd suggest that that has more benefit than anything else...

My bat has to feel like an extension of my arm and therefore I use it as much as I can. The same bat in nets and matches. I think it may be something to do with muscle memory but that could be just me.

Absolutely hate when people turn up with rock hard balls but I just have to work my shots around them.

I use my previous match bats during nets. That gives me the advantage of having a good bat and also using a bat that is close to my match bat weight wise. My theory is I have to love my match bats and I have to like my practice bats.

When I get a new match bat I just play with in a couple of nets to get used to it.

And Gingerbusiness, the BAS LE I bought from you would most probably be my match bat this season  :)
