Captained the marlow vets team today. Had not only 14 players but 12 were genuine over 35 as well. We played 11 field/11 bat and lent 2 players to take shifts as umpires and had a player as a rolling sub off the pitch. Our opening bowler was pretty happy when he bowled 7 on the bounce and could wander off for a lie down with the family. Likewise another vet had 10 overs to relax with his kids. Worked out pretty well as nobody was keen to play to much of a part lol. Anyway we bowled first and having got to 100-6 off 28 on a lightening outfield/flat deck, decided to toss them a few to get the score to something worth chasing. Having had to leave the field due to a pulled calf my vc overcooked things and let them get 44 off the last 2 and instead of a nice 180 chase we had 201 off 40. Despite a decent start we stalled mid innings and needed 70 off 8. Lucky for us we have a few expert sloggers and sneaked home by 2 wickets in the last over. Favourite moment was when they wheeled out the first team opening bowler for the last 3 overs at one end, only to see him go for 27 off 2.3 overs and being smacked into the corn field. Lovely ground, superb teas and good company. Beating a load of fit youngsters is always nice[emoji3]

Over 35 is a vet? Seriously? There's a lot of us on the forum that qualify then..

A good weekend for the club
Won the league on Saturday with a few games remaining and won the cup Sunday

Tried to pull a straight one Saturday and was bowled for a few runs
And Sunday,,batting against,by far the worst cricket balls I've ever seen (league supply balls for cup finals?)
I managed to fish at a wide one and edge it to the keeper for twenty

Yep, it's the only way we get a team out is to have an age where they might still be playing and good enough to take an active role. Helps when your vets can still smack 6's and bowl quick enough to hurry up the average clubbie. Cookham Dean Vets have an ex-berks player in their ranks.

Makes me laugh when you consider how many over 35s are still playing league cricket!

Yes - as a whole. Take any club and it's very difficult to get:-

1. 11 players over 40/45/50
2. To be fit enough play a Saturday and then a Sunday

We find we either have guys in their 40s/50s/60s who play only for us or a couple at the lower end who can still play both, within a club. It's rare to get a team of over 40/50s all from the same club who play league cricket regularly. Our aim is to expand the current 5 fixtures a season to 8/9 next season due to demand. Hopefully we will be able to attract a few more players from outside the club as well. Playing at ground like these, it's worth it.

First game of my official Sunday captaincy yesterday, friendly vs Ley Hill up at my club. Lost the toss, and had a young team stuck in the field. They got 285/5 from their 40, opener got 114 before being run out. I got 2/35 from my 8 overs. Opened the batting as the lad I wanted to decided he didn't want to last minute. His dad had a go at me for not bowling him, but as far as I have seen he is a keeper batsman, and also ripped into my decision not to have a deep fine leg or third man with a lightning outfield which apparently cost us 'about 150 runs', which is ridiculous as most runs went in front of square. Other opener hit 81 from 59, then two wickets fell in 2 balls. I set out to anchor the innings, and brought up 50 with a straight drive for 4 off a reasonably quick seamer whilst walking up the wicket. Later on hit their captain over his head for 4, and as I followed through cramped up and hit the deck pretty hard,  but turned down the runner sent out as I didn't want a runner, and brought up my maiden ton a few overs later with a single to long on. Was out after 38.5 overs, bowled by one that kept low for 112. Youngsters batting gave it a go to get the 20 needed from the last 7 balls, but we finished 270-7. Game was played in fantastic spirit and was great fun to be involved in. Also my first innings with my Blade, so that is now number 1 bat, and also batted without a helmet after drinks as it was too hot with one on and sweat was getting in my eyes.
Innings was 112 from 86, 15 4s and no 6s, strike rate 130. Suprised how few balls I faced in nearly 39 overs! Ridiculous weekend with the ton going with the hat-trick in the league on Saturday, which is apparently my clubs first ever league hat-trick.

Saturday we had an absolute belter of a game,
We batted first and scored 161 on a rum old track, they set about chasing it down we took 2 early wickets, and they then had a good partnership in the middle order taking them up to needing about 9 off 5 overs, then down to 5 off 4, then 3 off 3, then 3 off 2 and 2 was then needed off 3 balls, and they didn't manage to do it, we all went absolutely nuts as it's more or less wrapped us up the league title

Bit of a farce on Saturday. Travelled in the rain, but died down and the sun came out eventually. Delayed start, 35 overs with both umpires and oppo captain agreeing wicket and ground was fit, which it was. We won the toss and to the amazement of some of my players I opted to bat first on a normally good wicket. I opened up, good wicket despite the dampness. There opener got one to kick up on my, dropped my hands and hit me flush on the biceps with a lovely perfectly round bruise as a result. Next ball he banged it in shorter and I smashed it miles over square leg for 6. Negotiated the rest of over well and easily, next over my teammate took another 6 off the other opener. 12-0, a little meeting between captain and 2 of their bowlers, next ball he runs in at me and performs a massive slip, looked pretty convincing as he was sprawled on the floor. Umpires get together, call me and skipper together, suggest ground is unfit, lack of sawdust or effort from oppo to make it fit, so have to abandon game, in bright blue skies an sunshine as apparently the pitch won't get any better. It proceeded to stay dry and warm for the rest of the day, whilst our 2 rivals played and won, leaving us further adrift and pretty peed off
