Hi Guys,

I'm just after an opinion from yourselves.

I bought a bat in January this year, the bat has been knocked in, oiled & a hammer edge sheet applied. It has been used in 3 nets against the bowling machine and 1 net against spinners with cricket balls for 10 minutes after knocking in.

You notice a crack on the back of the bat coming from the splice and running 2 inches or so down the spine of the bat, where do you stand and what do you expect?

I would, contact the manufacturer/seller and expect atleast a repair if not a replacement,

not repairable as of now because the crack is not deep. I advise you to put some fibre glass tape along the crack to prevent the crack from spreading or going further down.

Possibly a handle fitted too tightly? I would hope that the retailer you got the bat from would fight your corner on this one. I know the sponsors are always very good with their customer service

That can only be a manufacturing fault, spliced too tightly. So send it back as it will eventually break.

While it can be fatal I've have a bat with the sort of crack on both the front of the back, and it'd been going strong for 2 seasons now.

This bat is a bb, and the subject of an on going discussions with the buyer.

I have used bats with similar cracks for a couple of seasons without any adverse effect.

As long the crack remains vertical you will be fine.

Place a measuring tape  against the crack and take a pic and post.

After further use let's see if it progresses. Will be interesting to find out to say the least.

Most likely caused by handle being hit too hard when fitted, bat might last a thousand years but clearly manufcaturers fault and you can rightly ask for a refund or replacement.

Probable that bat will not play at 100% due to internal damage.

If it was the right price why not.

I bought a bat recently with a split at the top. It was pointed out by the maker and all is great.
Bat bangs like a prostitutes door.
Canners has seen it at full tilt.

I'd buy that from the BB guys. Great bats and the blokes are from Essex, what's not to like.

If the crack was already there at the time of purchase and buyer was aware of that then I see no problem, but the bat was discounted for another reason then I can see where buyer's complaints are coming form.

I feel for bat makers on these issues, you can't predict what will or won't happen with a natural product like wood, and I assume market must be tight these days so you can't keep significant amount's of profit margins to cover up lots of losses like these , at the same time as buyers we will be hoping bats to last as long as they can so it is fair for buyers to expect bats to be good condition at least during the warranty period (if there is any).
