Long Blade or Custom bat
« on: June 11, 2014, 09:01:30 AM »

Gents,
Firstly if I do not have sufficient posts to post a "wanted" comment please do let me know (I remember the conversations about Items Wanted and For Sale but cant remember the outcome?).

As I now have at least 4 weeks off following an injury I thought noting better than a bit of retail therapy...

I visited Serious Cricket and Chase yesterday and it seems long blade bats are getting more difficult to find.  Serious said that Kooka do them (I know because Ive had a Kahuna before) but don't make many anymore.  Chase can make one and the FLC is possibly one of the best looking bats Ive ever seen, but I can justify the £375 price tag.  I have two Funky Long Blades which were ordered for me, one is a beaut and the other is dog poo; I also have a Bradbury which I picked up late last year.  The Bradbury is a great bat but the middle seems to high for me.

Anyway, I need to offload the Bradbury and replace with something more suitable for me so wanted to ask the following:
1.  Does anyone have a LB that they would recommend?  I like big edges and I love the Kahuna shape.  I normally use something around 2.11 - 2.13.
2.  Could a Forum sponsor recommend (or make) a custom bat?

Cheers guys.  Again, apologies in advance if this needs to be removed.

There is actually one more point to add...

Newbery (and others) often produce bats that are slightly shorter in the blade, do you think that a long handle (which seem more readily available) works in the same way for someone who normally uses a LB?

A bloke at my club went to chase and got an R4 long blade, bargain at £135 as it goes like stink.

And as for the long handle, no as the pickup & balance is different to a Long Blade, but it might be worth experimenting if you find a cheap one.

Long HAndle is the same length as a long blade but he pick up is different and when Newbery do short blade/long handle the bats end up short handle sized in total.

Cheers.  That's kind of what I mean...  For eg. the Newbery Kudos SH is the same overall length as a normal SH, despite the blade being a touch shorter.  If I went LH I presume it would be the same overall length as the LB I have.  I understand Newbery do it to get more weight in the bat and whilst this might make it a touch bottom heavy, it might be twist on what I have become used to?

Sorry if Im talking in riddles!

In the context of the Kudos, does their LB version actually mean its a regular blade with a longer handle?

We currently have a Long Blade TON Player Edition bat which weighs 2.13 as well as a Gladiator that is lighter.
We have a further delivery coming in around 2 weeks which will have Long Blades available in the full range and are also having one custom made for a customer which is a Long Blade with a Long Handle. Feel free to PM me if you need further details or would like to have one custom made.

I have had long blade bats from most out there

any maker on here could make you a decent long blade for under £300 as none of mine cost that

just be specific with what length you want the blade as asking for an extra inch like I did I found like you have said with Newbery different makers have different length standard blades

And in terms of length, the LH is the same overall length as the LB generally, however, as others have said, two bats of the same brand, model and weight, one LH and one LB will pick up differently due to the change in weight distribution. Generally I've found that the LH picks up heavier due to more weight being distributed towards the toe.

How much difference does it really make? On a bat like a M&H solution, where more of the weight is concentrated towards the toe, a lot. On a higher middled bat, not so much.

I think Im spending too long thinking about it... My best season as far as form and runs are concerned was using a standard Kook Kahuna 1250.  This was back end of the season before last.  Since then Ive found that a standard bat looks like a match-stick in my hands (Im 6'6 and I saw some batting footage) and this has got me concerned about my stance and technique.

Id guess Peter Fulton is a similar build to me and whilst he looks very comfortable in his stance at the crease, I don't!  Anyone know what size bat he's using?

The trouble is, you can never really try these things without committing.  Maybe an idea for any batmakers or shops...  Get a net and allow blokes to have a hit with different bat sizes and weights, a bit like a golf net at a golf shop!

If your best season batting is with a standard bat, why bother changing? It doesn't matter what you look like, it matters how you play, and if you've played best with a SH, use one of those.
