A good time to buy UK bats?
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:14:44 AM »

Peering over the fence can sometimes be a painful experience for us based outside the UK. There's a wealth of talented bat makers producing high quality products - but of course we (on the other side) have to factor in currency conversion and shipping costs which can often be a deal breaker.

As it is every year, the end of the UK summer cricket season leads us to peer over the fence once more to pounce on what offerings may be available (both new and second hand).

However, during this week and next we might be tempted with another carrot - next week's Scottish vote for independence. With the falling pound (reportedly the lowest it has been since November 2013) and impending end of season sales, now might be an opportune moment to pick up a bargain.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-09-07/pound-in-peril-as-opinion-poll-puts-scottish-separatists-ahead.html

So my questions to the forum are: have you spotted any decent bargains this week? Are there any forthcoming sales (prior to the vote) that prospective overseas buyers should be aware of? Are there any economists out there who have thoughts on this matter - any forecasts on how this (e.g. further weakening of the pound) could affect the industry?

Is there a case for a few lads to get together and get bats shipped at once? This may well save on shipping cost etc?

Thoughts?

That's a really, really good idea. Although I can imagine the moment when that box arrives... it will be torn to shreds!

And you have to think about any custom charges if you order multiple bats.

Can you get round that by calling them samples?

Depends if a seller wants to do that or not.

I think OP is from Australia, in which case, anything under AU$1000 do not attract any GST or duties. Group buy is on! Lol

Pound doesn't seem to have dropped that much again the Kroner, still above 10, whereas last year it was done below 9. Lets hope some more Yes voters pop up in the polls!

The weaker the pound gets, the more expensive kit will get as so much is imported in from India. We're already at our lowest point this year with it trading at under 100 rupees to the pound.

For those outside of the UK, new ranges will go up as always next year if over the period of the next 6 months the pound does drop significantly, prices won't change in terms of £ over the season. But they would increase dramatically for 2015/16.

So you suggest purchasing now whilst the opportunity still exists? Makes perfect sense.

Prices will have already been set for next years ranges by the factories, and for the retailers - so assuming the £ does bomb, you have a year to take advantage.

Yep, I'm in Australia - but I suppose group purchases could be organised between others as well.

Still got my eyes peeled for one of those bargains though!
