If you owned Mongoose
« on: September 18, 2014, 09:01:46 AM »

Assuming you had enough capital to buy the Mongoose brand, what would you change? How would you approach the 2014/15 season? Who would you sponsor?

I would try to sponsor Jason Roy and David Warner

Their kit seems good so more tweaks than major changes.
I might be tempted to bring out a blue range to sit alongside the purple/pink ranges.

Their softs seem to sell well so not much change to their designs.

I'd get rid of all the current sponsorship deals and try get hold of one England international, possibly Jordan, maybe some upcoming prospect like Roy? I'd also look to see where else Mongoose are selling the most bats and possibly try and sponsor one of that country's guys. I would have no more than 2 sponsorships. Don't see the value in sponsoring county players, they just don't get enough TV air time.

I'd probably let retailers come in and hand pick and I'd look into production, I think I read somewhere that Mongoose are produced by other companies. I'd look to change that and get someone in to produce in house, that way I feel you'd have more control over the product.

Given the number of units they are selling, your second point here would have to be along term target. The current providers are Hunts and Sareen, and given that there are other makers out there with equally impressive track records, would that really be worthwhile? I think there are opportunities in other areas that are likely to provide far more bang for buck. Products that have sold out quickly?

I'd be taking a long hard look at whether I wanted to retain Mongoose as a cricket only brand...

You'd want to keep Laurie Evans and Riki Wessels at least. Gareth Andrew too, as he's the only one to use the paddle...

Marquee signings are tough to get right. A Saffer might be a good shout - Quinton de Kock? And go from there.

I think an orange/yellow colourway would be cool and carry with it an appeal to the Antipodeans.

Sponsor Ireland Cricket. Get their team using the bats/gear where possible.

Which other sports do you think, Tim? Golf didn't work out well for Woodworm.

I'm not sure about whether you start with a sport. The soft goods (caps and casual shirts) they sold last year went like hot cakes and you couldn't get hold of them, so I think something like that might be a better opportunity.

Take it back to a small time business.

Sponsor only players willing to use the MMI3 in t20s
cut back to one set off softs, and bags.
Bats to 1 regular shape, core and the mmi3.

Look to make a living not millions from it.

I think there is also an opportunity for the new buyer to introduce something new in the range that should keep the cricketers interested  - for  t20 format may be performance laminates, or bats made from over sized clefts or some new  shape altogether
Mmi3 is old concept now and not being able to introduce any new product must have hurt mongoose

Don't sponsor a player. Unless it's an England international it'll just get lost among the zillions of other players.

Sponsor a tournament - not a pro one, but a youth/amateur league.

You could actually create a T-20 tournament where lets say 2 big hitters from each team must use mongoose gear, at the end of the tournament they get to keep it maybe?

Get the bats are performing well, make sure people see this and want one.

Refresh the softs, as they are fairly decent, just update the look.

Maybe provide a custom option.

Make sure sponsorship is right. No-one too expensive, but not just anyone. Get a couple of decent youngsters and female England players.

Target one area of the country, and sponsor a number of players. That way, the supporters see the same bat coming out a number of times per game.

Invest in grassroots cricket.

It's a bit of a gimmick mongoose, type cast by that ridiculous bat that looks like a rowing boat paddle.

Trying to make it a little more of a serious brand may be an option I'd look at.

It was built on the gimmick, but is a solid brand name.

You could have both if you get the bats right.
