Returning from a torn ACL, much prefer batting partners in the Inzamam sort of build. Gentle as you like singles, also means no chance of going for suicidal ones or twos.

Doest bother anymore but I did once have a fellow opener that just messed with my head, game & average.  He once took 12 overs to get off the mark! That was my final straw.  I said after the game "drop him down the order". They moaned & said he was too slow for down the order so if I didnt want to bat with him I should bat lower down.  2 Weeks later I was asked to be stand in skipper. I opened & dropped him to 7. He smashed 40odd if a few balls then said he was leaving the club.  That drink in the pub after the game tasted very nice.

Re: running between the wickets (key in a batting partner!), a lot of guys at our club seem to only take into account their own running ability when judging a single or a two, am I the only cricketer who actually takes into account who I'm batting with when judging a run? So many run outs I've seen over the past few seasons have ended in the caller being home safe and sound and the non caller being the one going to the danger zone and being too slow. Now obviously some of this may be down to poor backing up but I see so many players who just refuse to appreciate that not everyone runs at the same speed! One of our openers is like a scalded whippet between the wickets and he regularly gets wound up that people don't push for quick singles and twos/threes as much as him but if you're batting with someone in their 50's the chances of them keeping up with a particularly athletic 20somethingyearold are slim!

Sorry for being slightly off topic but all this talk of running between the wickets got me thinking.

TL;DR..... Good running between the wickets means also taking into account what your batting partner is capable of, rather than just what you are capable of.

Tbh, that's a bit of a **** approach by you forcing someone out the club just because you didn't like it

Sadly it's common and I agree being a good runner isn't about speed of foot.. It's a combination of pace, speed of thought, ability to judge a run for BOTH batsmen. Otherwise your just being an ****

People who do that do my head in, seeing the shine off etc is all very well but selfishly just trying to bat for as long as possible when opening ruins the game for everyone else if you're not even going to bother to try and score any runs. Got very fed up at times last season batting at 4/5 and coming in at 110/3 with 10 overs left. Almost always when these batsmen do get moved down the order they whack it everywhere like you say, so it clearly isn't that they can't score. Easily forgotten in amateur cricket that opening should be where your best batsman is most of the time.

re. batting partners, I prefer someone who rotates strike well as I often don't, a partner who knocks it around well and calls you through hugely helps you get into your innings.

Easily forgotten in amateur cricket is you need 11 players so annoying the 'lesser' ones or guys who don't want to biff means you'll scratch around for players

Not saying everyone has to biff mate, but there's got to be some intent to score runs at some stage! It's the guys who go out with the aim of getting 40-50ish not out from 45 overs who wind me up, meaning the middle order players have no choice but to slog when they get in at the end. One of the openers in the team I played for last season is a good example, he's not the greatest batsman and can't biff to save his life, but he gets himself in and then gets on with hitting the gaps and running well to make his runs and does a good job for the team, got us plenty of runs and a good start to the innings more often than not.

Here's one that must annoy everyone - we've all played with that one guy who runs tight ones straight to the fielder like lightning when it's his run, but then sits on his bat at the other end and won't jog the easy ones for anyone else!

Batted with a few over the years that have batted for their 50avg
It does no one any good and just breaks clubs/teams up.

For once, I agree with you so much!!

One would presume there's other niggles behind this than just him scoring too slow if he celebrated him quitting the club.

Ah ok, if you bat for 40 overs or more on a standard deck etc then yes, anything less than 75 isn't really on regardless how 'safe' you are

Yes, those players annoy me too, run for their runs but are lazy on anyone else's (usually moan loudly too if they feel they've missed a run !!)
