Affinity Carbine Sport from Vitas
« on: October 08, 2014, 11:58:48 PM »

I bought an Affinity Persona off Marcus at the start of this year and despite several other purchases in the mean time, nothing has come close to the performance of this bat. The downside is that Marcus told me from the outset that I may get 5 seasons use from it or I may get 1 seasons use from it and so I have started looking for the successor to the throne of Match bat. I would rather retire this bat a little early rather than see it split or crack in my hands. My Persona has 6 grains and is the king of ping so is quite a hard act to follow but being a devoted CBF'er, I will not rest until I have tried many bats on the market.....
I have dealt with Jake before and so had confidence in his ability to find me something to suit my needs. I emailed him with my requirements: 2.10-11 lbs, oval handle and must ping! I wasn't concerned with profile as I have slowly learnt that the shape of the bat has more an effect on the pick up of the bat rather then the performance or where you hit the ball on the bat. Jake sent through pics of quite a selection of his bats ranging from B&S through H4L to Slazenger and Affinity.
Jake recommended the pick of the litter was either the H4L or the Affinity Carbine Sport (as long as I didn't mind the affinity only having 5 grains) and seeing as the H4L had quite a round handle, I was delighted to go with the Carbine Sport! The three best performing bats I have ever owned have been an M&H Amplus with 6 grains, my Persona with 6 grains and now this Carbine with 5 grains! 15 grains are nice to look at but for sheer performance, don't discard a bat with only a few grains without trying them. This is definitely Grade 1 performance stuff!
I had Jake oil and knock this in for me and have given it another hour or son with the mallet and breaking in the handle over another bat handle before using her in a couple of nets sessions. This baby pings! People who have owned an Affinity will know what I am talking about when I mention the sound it makes on contact with the ball: kind of a high pitched "crack" with the handle flexing ever so slightly in your hands and the rather pleasing result of seeing the bowler ducking for cover!
The Carbines profile is fuller than a fat kids lunchbox with all the meat in the right places whilst still picking up like a dream and feeling rather wand-like. I could not be happier and feel maybe I may found the successor....

Looks wonderful bro. Since I've gone affinity I haven't gone back  :D I currently have both the Ayrtek and Toro models and just today placed an order for a Carbine from Marcus. Hope there are heaps of runs in your future...

Great looking bat. Glad to hear it's going well for you. Could you explain what you mean when you said breaking in the handle? I've heard a little about this before but never done it.

ive copped a bit of flack over this but do it to all my bats and have had no issues with it and it has made the bat feel and perform better IMO. I place a bat face down on the ground and then place the new bats handle at 90 degrees to it at the top. I then place pressure on the back of the new bat by pushing down on it with my foot. I do this for around 10 minutes slowly building the pressure up. Try it but don't jump up and down on it...

I've done this to a couple of bats by placing the toe on the kitchen floor and the handle on the lip that goes into our dining room, it's only a small amount (30mm) but a few minutes bending the handle with your foot will loosen it up!
Also handles are rather strong, I'm a right fat git and would happily stand on the handle when doing this!

just adding my two pennys worth, cant tell if the blade is bowed or straight but this is one of the nicest shaped bats ive seen on the forum

you would have to get past the few number of grains but as has been said many times on here, number of grains does not relate to how good the willow is and therefore how well the bat will play
very nice bat

This used to be a common practice Players at all levels used to do this to give more flex.
But theory's  changed for example GN Titanium and carbo handles increased stiffness equals more power by transferiring the impact back to the blade.

My Spectre doesn't look too dissimilar to that mate, maybe an extra grain or two but it is a pleasure to bat with

Glad you are pleased with your bat mate :)

As for the handle thing, i've seen it done, i've never had the courage to do it myself though! I suppose it is just a way of fast-forwarding what happens naturally when you use a bat. Many handles are a little tight/stiff and will loosen up in time.

At our forum event last year Simmy was invited by one of the batmakers at Hunts to stand on the back of his bat after it was wedged up in a similar fashion, he declined!

Cheers mate. The price is the best bit: £235. That is still a bit a cash but compared to what we pay here is Aus for off the shelf stuff of comparable performance (yes, Legend Gold, I'm looking at you! Lol), it is an absolute bargain!

Thanks for the kind words, fellow bat lovers! Breaking the handles in has transformed how my bats knock in and feel straight off. The pressure is only slight at the start and builds up but the total flex is only around 20mm max.
I would love to think this is my "forever" bat but I think it's the search more so than the result that keeps me buying... A bit like trying to nail the perfect cover drive and never quite feeling that you can't do better in some way. I hope that makes sense as I use it to justify my ongoing bat purchasing...  :D

You are knocking the handle in. Tehcnically, if the retailer doesn't know, then how can it?
