When to get a new helemt
« on: November 16, 2009, 07:50:32 AM »

I've had my gn helmet for approx 5 years now, and in that time I can recall being struck on the head about 3 times.

Does a helemt lose its protective qualities once it has been struck x number of times? Are there any other factors which could compromise the safety of a helemt?

I think I'm right in saying that you are supposed to send it back to the manufacturer for checks once you have been struck by a ball, to ensure it's integrity.

Obviously, I wouldn't leave my helmet at the bottom of my cricket bag as then it would be more susceptible to bumps and knocks.

Ayrtek would probably be the guy to contact on these matters though pal.

Your meant to replace them after each blow, but in the real world unless the helmet has been damaged in such that it has cracked or is visually broken the average cricketer is most likely to carry on wearing the same helmet unless they have very deep pockets.

5 years is a fair amount of time to have had the same one though so i would have a good look at the interior of it to make sure none of the polystyrene liner is broken etc as this will take away its integral strength when being hit as well as having it knocking around in your bag for 5 seasons it may have casued stress to the outer shell if its a plastic version.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. I've inspected the helemt inside and out and cannot see any damage. The polystyrene seems to be intact. I might just give it another year with the old lid!

yeh basically as its either an EPS or polystrene liner when impacted it will crush when hit rather than being hit and returning to its original shape like some more expensive foams do (like a memory foam matress for example).

When crushed it obviously has a weakened structural property meaning less impact resistance if hit there again or in the case on most liners weakening the overall structural strength of the inner shell as it is formed as a one piece insert.
