What are they doing?!
« on: March 06, 2015, 08:59:25 AM »

So...

Had our third club nets session on Wednesday evening and I took along my Bubble for the first time (all balls used are ex-match balls, no horrible rocks so no real risk - anything full of length I've always left in an indoor net session).  Although I'd used it for a previous summer net, it was getting some attention, not least from one guy who was (I'm not exaggerating) besotted with it, recounting his youth watching Stewart and Thorpe and spouting details about every Bubble model (strange how he missed this release last year but there you go).

He's not an aggressive player (once took 38 balls to get off the mark in a 40 over game, another game was 3 not out after 20 overs), so I suggested he used it (he currently has a Kook genesis) and if he really liked it to make me an offer.  I don't really want to get rid of it but have a 40th birthday lads weekend in April to fund...

I had a good net with it then passed it over.  I'd modified the grip last summer to my usual preference - double binding bottom hand and two grips, with the grip taped at the bats shoulders.  This has served me since then and for numerous Vitas net sessions without any trouble.

After his ten minute net, I get the bat back with the tape dislodged and the grip has rode up the handle a quarter of the way.  I still feel violated (and not in a good way!).

I have some grip grip and will use it but my question is; what the heck is he doing to that grip when batting to make it do that in only ten minutes?!  I've seen it happen to bats before and constantly wonder how; a) it happens and b) how people can bat with a grip half way up the bat handle...

Does anyone on here do this?  Do you know why?!

It can happen when the grip is starting to wear and is held to tight ( grip squeezed ).

Yep, too tight a bottom hand grip. Owais Shah used to be the worst for this, he seemed to have given up in the second half of his career, just left the grip halfway up the handle!

Yeah, too much bottom hand,,,not that that's a bad thing
I used to do that to a grip in the nets
Started using the glue on grips for a few years, but I use grip grip type tape now

I remember that, absolute disgrace to his profession  ;)

Too tight bottom hand seems the consensus, less gripping more strangled in this case...

Cheers chaps

I'm a massive candidate for this - still play everything along the ground just have a tendency to get the grip moving!

The worst bit is even that gripgrip tape doesn't work - think it lasted about 10/15mins in the nets before the grip started moving (which is still better than anything else I've used to be fair to them!).

Yeah, I spend a good 10 mins every two hour net session sorting out grips for players in the lower teams!  They all ask why them, I try to explain the bottom handed grip but none of them really get it!

As soon as my grip starts to rise a disproportionate amount I realise I'm gripping a bit too tight and start focusing on my top hand a touch more.

Watched the brilliant documentary about Adam Gilchrist which was on skysports again last night. For those who havent seen it, he describes in his latter career how he used a coaching technique where he put a squash ball in his bottom hand glove to ensure he wasn't gripping too hard and only really using the thumb and index finger. Scored world cup final ton with the ball in his glove!!! Worth a try?

I leant a bat to a billy bottom handed slogger because he'd broken his (there's my first mistake!)

If minutes later my newly applied grip is riding up the handle and the grip tape no use to May or beast any more. It was impressive that he'd managed it so quickly but said a lot about his "technique"

I've just moved over to using Grip Grip tape but haven't started netting yet.. not sounding promising though considering it's price but will find out for myself eventually...

Grip grip has solved the problem for me, but grips seem to wear out quicker with it. Which makes sense really. Still definitely worth it, as i like my grips lined up perfectly.
