What is this LMS cricket that many of you talk about and play?

It's an eight a side cricket game where last batsman is allowed to bat without a partner. It's run internationally with various teams from US, UK, Australia and other countries participating.

they currently have their world championship running. its being held in barbados.(although for the right price any team can take part) one of my mates works for last man stands so is out their basically being payed to play cricket and do the umpiring and other bits.

its effectively a social game of cricket when everything is organise and you turn and play.

I run a team fattus - if you want to understand more, give me a shout. Basically 8 a side hit and giggle cricket on a week night or weekend. 2.5 hour T20. It is sometimes not quite as social as some people make out

Also has some interesting rules to deal with the gamesmanship that can go on.

Double Play - If you catch the striker out, the non-facing batsman has to return to their crease before the ball breaks the wicket there else both batsmen can be out.

Due to the retire at 50 rule, you can have lower order batsmen giving their wicket away to ensure that the run scorers come back in. If you, as the fielding team, think a batsman has done this, you can appeal against the out, ensuring that the low scoring batters stay in.

It is five ball overs. First wide results in an extra run and an extra ball. Every wide afterwards doesn't result in an extra ball but costs two runs. Everything that goes down the legside without touching bat or ball is considered a wide.

It is true that some teams are not so social but in the most part they are a good bunch. The league standard varies hugely, some of the mid-week London leagues are ultra competitive but out league (Clapham Sunday) is a Sunday league in every sense of the word. It works for us as most of us cannot spare a whole day, and the rubbish players can play without having to spend 5 hours in the sun not bowling to get out first ball if that makes sense. Fancy a game we always have space!

I could be keen mate - moving clubs to play for Roan and Lambethans on Saturdays but keen for a shorter game on Sundays. What sort of time does it normally run from/until?

As tim2000 said they are about 2 hours. And the time changes each week but its from 10-12 12.30-2.30 etc until I think the last one is about 5 ish but I haven't checked the schedule. We are the worst team in the world mind,,,, not even a joke.

From what I understand LMS is a Franchise operation. The ECB give rights to geographic areas and the organiser pays to run the event in that area. In order for the organiser to get his money back they then have to flog crap kit and whack up hire fees. It's in effect a money making operation that the ECB hopes will drive up participation.

Knew it wouldn't take long for them to start selling kit - it's definitely Robinsons looking at the designs/fonts used. It was always going to end up as a money spinner for someone.

Nothing to do with the ECB. Last Man Stands is owned by a couple of Saffas or Aussies (can't remember) who flog the regional franchises to people. ECB jumped on the band wagon a couple of years ago and gave it their blessing when they realised that London had about 30 odd leagues and loads of people playing. I know the London and Devon franchise owners, and there is a lot of organising going on. The fees in London are �90 per match per side, and for that you simply turn up and play. You just have to organise your team. Umpires and grounds are provided (although umpires are often of dubious quality). When you consider that you are essentially paying �13 a head to play weekly, people don't mind too much. Especially as all they have to do is turn up with their mates.

Many teams bring along a crate of beer and enjoy that when participating.

There is also a "registration fee" that is obtained through providing overpriced shirts.

It's 8 a side so over �10 match fees for hit and giggle? We get a full days cricket and a tea provided for less than that!
