Saturday in the North
« on: May 06, 2015, 09:58:03 AM »

Hi,

Can anyone get me a game on Saturday please?

I'm in Scunthorpe so somewhere reasonably close would be good.

Our first team don't have a game and I'm not allowed to play for the 2nds because of a stupid league rule.

Russ

PS I'm a very ordinary batsman

Just out of interest, what league rule is that?

In the Hampshire league I don't think the dropping down rule kick in until you've played 8 games in a higher side

I'm not sure if this should be on a new thread but if it generates any interest I am sure the Admins will tell me!

I would like to know what peoples views are on dropping down a team if the "senior" team isn't playing. There are probably two schools of thought:
1 - Its better for the club to put out the strongest possible team.
2 - The guys that normally play in the team should continue to do so and shouldn't be dropped just because a first team player is available.

What are your thoughts.

Cheers

Our club will continue to play those who would normally play in that team, maybe the addition of one boarder line player if they need game time. However, tbh personally I don't like artificial strengthening but don't count this as that. Mainly because the leagues shouldn't be stupid enough to have blank weeks in the season!!

....but putting that discussion on another thread would probably help this thread find Russ a game as intended! :)

The rule is very grey, if a "first team" player plays in the seconds and does well the opposition can put in an appeal to the league which if upheld can result in the other team being dropped points.  It was introduced a few years back to stop clubs that have 2 or 3 teams strengthening them at the end of the season to ensure 2nd or 3rd team dont get relegated.  I don't agree with artifically strengthening your team just because you can and I wouldn't want someone to step down so that I can play but this won't happen at my club anyway.

That isn't the case here, first team play in Div 1 and 2nd team in Div 2 so there is not much of a gap in standard and I wouldn't make a massive difference, it's just stopping me playing.  Frustratingly my first team game has been moved to Sunday to accomdate the oppositon as they have 4 Saturday teams, made even worse by the fact that I'm going on holiday on Sunday (I always make my wife book Monday to Wednesday so I only miss one weekend of cricket).

Fair point  - I would stress that I was not intending to hinder Russ's efforts to find a game and wish him the best of luck for Saturday!

we tend to select teams and then if one game is cancelled the players in that team miss out or backfill gaps.

has been difficult a couple of times - gaps tend to occur in our fours so they sometimes field one or two players from a higher standard...

I find myself in the same position as Russ, although its because my club seems to have forgotten about me.

We would pick seconds as normal. But if any gaps need filling, rather than weakening the thirds, the available first then fill in.
We often fight for a game too..... Everyone wants to play. Last time I got a game it was a wet weekend, we bowled oppo out for 74(all second team bowlers) and had about 40mins of light to knock them off.
I opened, and scored 68 of our 75 and we knocked them of in 7 overs.... Whoops.

Anyway back to original topic, I have asked for you Russ, but all 3 sat sides have been filled already.  Sorry
