So who gets lumbered with the scoring in your team?
Do you pay for your scorers?
Who pretends to go to the toilet when it's time to volunteer?

We have a scorer in our Sunday team called James he does scoring for a lot of county games, we pay him �20 to score and you get wagon wheels, strike rates, dot balls the lot. All in different colours etc pretty cool stuff, on the flip side if you play for our other Sunday team all the youngsters seem to not be able to use a pen (or pull the ropes in, push the covers on) but thats another story.

What irritates me slightly is there willingness not to learn how to score, you ask them and they just want to play footy or do something else.

We do it between ourselves but we have two guys who take great pride in their scoring so they usually get lumped with it. One's an opening bat and the other a number 11 so there is rarely a case when anyone else is required, though we have a couple of candidates whose attention spans are so short that its a miracle if the score book is within 10 runs of adding up.

Usually me that does it until I have to pad up. By then someone else that can scor eis usually doing it. I'm teaching the missus to score on the tablet so she can do it when she comes along to watch!

Our 1st and 2nd teams have "professional" scorers.
The 1st XI scorer just enjoys doing it, and does a mighty fine book (with dots, colours and no spelling mistakes!)
The 2nd XI scorer used to do the book for Hampshire and does (as you'd expect) a proper job of it.

Below those two teams its usually allocated to whoever isn't batting and has the ability to write (which a lot of youngsters apparently don't have!) so there can be several scorers through the course of an innings, which results in a mess to try and decipher at the end of the innings.

I used to play for a team who had their own version of Bill Frindall and the books looked immaculate.

The team I play for now find it hard enough to get 11 players let alone a scorer, so we take turns when we are batting and the oppo do the same, (although as Radiomark says some people do seem to have very weak bladders just when we need a volunteer). When I am doing it I just focus on getting the basic info down correctly and making sure I don't miss anything.

We have to take turns doing that too.

I had the misfortune of having to give out our top scorer from last season on Saturday - caught behind - he wasn't happy but fortunately our other bat agreed he knicked it.

We have a few guys that use the ''i don't know how to do it'' pisses me off as it was compulsory to learn as a junior. How can you play and watch cricket for several years and not even have a slight understanding of how to score. The other guy who does it with me has left the club so the kids better start learning as there is no way i'm scoring for 45 overs.

We have a club scorer/statistician (literally keeps a perfect record since 1985,every single ball!) who covers first team, first team cup and curtis bennett team. The 2nds cover it themselves BUT for some strange reason a lot of people at the club enjoy the fact the stats are so complete so the scorebook is kept accurate, meaning it's always in different colours, scored ball by ball and rarely doesn't add up (every game goes to the stat man who magically always finds the mistake anyway!).

He produces all the facts and figures you could wish for. He scores England, England Lions, MCC, County, County 2's games regularly so is quite big on the whole thing. I don't think there is anyone at the club who can't score, some are neater etc than others but everyone does it properly, all the right symbols, different colours etc.

As it happens, I've just got the club 5 new laptops and am in the process of installing TCS on them all, then I'll have a central TCS database on my home server thats up all the time, make all of them have the ability to link to it at their ground and boom, we can have every team scoring with TCS from the 2016 season onwards, every team will be live on the net then.

I don't get why people don't like scoring, who the hell wants to just sit there all game doing nothing or even have to umpire.. just sit and score, let others do the board (if it's not electronic) and life is dead easy. I often just walk around the boundary with the book while scoring so it's not like I miss out on being able to move

When I was out injured a couple of seasons ago (and before we had the 2nd XI scorer) I was doing the book so I was still making a contribution.

I'm not as neat as our professional scorer, but I had a few comments from the oppositions that they "were surprised I was able to do the book as well as I did, considering my age." I guess that means that anyone under the age of 25 now claims they don't know how to do it!

On a separate note the Colts hate me on Sundays. The conversation normally goes something like this:
"Oi *insert name here*, come and do their scorebook for me"
"I don't know how"
"I'll teach you, get in here before the over starts!"
Not knowing how to so it isn't a valid excuse, you can learn on the job!

We don't do oppositions score books I'm afraid. If they want it doing they can provide a scorer. We tend to have someone with us even for both sunday teams games so do our own. if we don't a couple of us have TCS on our mobiles, with our own team preset, just keep a record of our bowling and boom.. obviously, we don't care if the batting section for them is right etc

We normally make arrangements before the game starts "we'll do yours, if you do ours".
That way you can confer with another scorer to make sure the scores are right (or you've both made the same mistakes so they tally!), and you have a (hopefully) correct book and no copying out to do at the end of the game.

that is good if teams just want a basic book (ie batsmen runs (no dots, wides, no balls etc) and bowlers just stats. We've found that very few do it fully so as we'd rather have a full one we do it ourselves. even with bowling, we tend to mark silly things down like drops in yellow, where catches went, where it went but fell down etc. just means over time we'll be able to hopefully set better fields (this was only started last year and it's surprising how people are totally wrong about their own fields and believes about where it goes)
