Now I don't rate Hales at all I think he's a flat track bully and shouldn't ever be in any England team other than 20/20.

However that a side the guy is top form and scoring runs for fun. Lyth deserve's a chance and should have had a go in the West Indies but England persisted in Trott for some unknown reason.

You would think that if there was an injury to a batter then there would be a good chance that Hales would get the (No Swearing Please) and get called up but hes got no chance of this if he's in the IPL.

Even if he's 3rd or 4th down the list to be called up he's not going to be able to move up the list bashing some runs in the hit a giggle cricket (I hate 20/20 btw)

You may disagree but just looks like someone who is chasing �� instead of trying to get selected for England and I find that really sad.

would you trust the ECB do do the right think by you having seen what they've done recently?? Or would you take the money and run?

Let's be honest Hales had a good season last year and has started this one off well but before that he was bang average and had to be loaned out.

I think the ECB are doing the right thing in not picking him because he just isn't good enough.

But I get your point re the ECB no I wouldn't trust them to do the right thing as they are a bunch of muppets however I would like to think that a youngish player in the UK would still favor test selection of money. It's not like he's not getting a good wage at Notts.

Excellent start in red ball cricket, but we're going with Lyth for now. Why don't you go to India and get experience on those decks?

Cricketers have a limited shelf life, can you blame a bloke in the form of his life taking a chance to earn some big bucks?

What would you do in the same situation - stay at home on the off chance you might get a call up if someone gets injured, or cash in. I know which one is go for...

This is the ECB we're talking about - KP being captain for the Ashes is more likely...

I think the KP thing has been handled terribly, but Hales has to get permission from the ECB to play. Notts themselves have previously refused any of their guys to go to IPL, but now Mick Newell is a selector, this stance has softened. That could well be ECB influence.

1. Bet you don't rate someone like mccullum either, only batsmen who score at a strike rate of 20 are acceptable to you no?

I think McCullum is a good player not a great player, he often goes missing in big games despite getting off to good starts fails to make enough game changes scores. He is however an excellent captain.

Just because I don't like 20/20 doesn't mean your instantly a Geoff Boycott fan. One of my main issues with England and the way they play their test Cricket is that they are far to defensive and approach the cricket in a negative way. If we approach Cricket in a more positive manner similar to the way in which Clarke and McCullum captain their teams I think we would be in better shape no matter what team the selectors decided to come up with.

I agree with the other comment to, what do you expect Smith to say? That the IPL is taking his game backwards? Good players are good players it doesn't matter what the format is

It's all about balance of expectation.

In the past, everyone wanted to play Test cricket and the ODIs were a bit of a change. Now that T20 is here and paying good money, there are different ways to go.

England often use the T20 and ODI teams as stepping stones into international cricket.

Hales is down the list to play tests for England, for now. So he goes to the IPL, gets some good experience playing against top opposition and comes back in a better place to play T20 and ODI cricket for England.

He can then build into a test player too.

Good reply chief, agree about your comments on Clarke and mccullum. Although players have a lot to do with approach too. If you're only going to pick certain types of players then your approach cannot change. That's why I feel England picking butler was important. Compare the current English batting line up to the 05 ashes team. We have too many accumulators at the moment that's why I feel hales should get a chance he'll improve. Actually on that note there are quotes somewhere by david warner, who said it was speaking to Sehwag which improved his test game. He spoke how Sehwag told him it's okay to take a t20 approach into test cricket like he did (another case of the ipl helping players by the way).

As for smith well offcourse he won't say ipl is taking his game backwards, but there's a difference between playing in the competition for money and actually playing in it because it improves your game. When hales joins mumbai he's gonna play under ponting. He might not even play! But surely spending a week or so with ponting in the nets, along with other good players will improve hales. Not only that but it will give him an opportunity to showcase his talent, must keep in mind that he didn't actually get picked up in the original auction because barring 5-6 players, Indians/foreign coaches don't really rate English players for the shorter forms of the game at the moment.
