He will only remembered by many in England for his prepare for a F.... Broken arm comment to a true great of the game
And his failure to win the ashes in the UK

You mean the way that most Aussies remember Mike Gatting for his clueless effort against the "ball of the century"?

Not the same Gattings always played  in the correct way.

What like when he went on rebel tour to SA?

To threaten to injure another player doesn't make you great it shows your limitations

Does that mean Warne and McGrath aren't greats, due to their fondness for a chirp?

He was a great, but not an all time great in my opinion.

Anderson long way short of being anyway near great...
You're talking out of your (No Swearing Please).
I know it's been a tough day for you lot but recognize the stats
He's England's all time lead wicket taker.

You can't be mediocre and take 400+ poles

Never liked Clarke but he's been great for Australia.

At least he waited until the end of the tour to retire, unlike 2 Poms last time.

Good luck to him.

Great player yet not able to warrant an all time great status in my eyes! Good guy touched by the passing of his close friend, wish him all the best!

Clarke is a much better captain than a lot of people give him credit for. The players at his disposal are inferior to the Ponting days. If Clarke captained the sides Ponting captained, Clarke would have won way more test matches.

I agree smokem but history won't remember him like we remember Steve Waugh as captain

AUS has Great Team. It can do well even with Average Captain.

Giving credits for Pointing or Clarke is useless

They got Stars during Pointing ERA

.Hayden
.Gilly
.Pointing
.Sym
.Hussey
.Martin
.bevan
.mcc
.Lee
.Warne

and list goes onnnnn

I personally don't think Clarke will be remembered as a great of the game but what I personally liked about Clarke is that he seemed a genuine bloke. He has lead that team very well and the way he handled the Phillip Hughes incident was extremely admirable. He was very emotional yesterday and I remember him being equally emotional when Ponting retired, you could tell that team and the blokes he played with (even though allegedly had his disagreements with a few people) was what it was all about.

The whole broken arm thing was unfortunate but I don't really think you can hold it against him, I bet worse has been said but not caught on a stump mic.

Thanks and good luck Mr Clarke, just wished I'd sold the bat with your name on before you quit! Although doesn't that make it extra limited edition quality now? :-)

The back and hamstring were consistent battles he faced both physically and mentally but demise of Philip Hughes had shattered his emotions and affection. However, his commitment and dedication to the cause is applauding.

More so, as @Buzz pointed out, he did not have a supporting selection committee.

Certainly a great, he lead the team which did not have superstars to a global glory. Ricky Ponting's decline started when his star players retired which made him ineffective afterwards, thus, Micheal Clarke lead brilliantly with the pool of players he had.

Extremely well spoken and a decent bloke on and off the field. Always looked very tidy both, on and off the field.

Big loss for cricket, not many superstars left in cricket except handful.

Hope he scores a massive ton in his final innings and leads his side to glory.

He is one the of best Australian batsmen ever. Nearly 9000 test runs. 4th on the list for the Aussies.

When he was fit he was a brilliant batsmen to way watch

He was inconsistent before the Hughes tragedy. He should have retired from tests last Australian Summer and Retired with a World Cup as Smith was ready then.

Pro cricketers just get a bit selfish $$$ and push a little too long. He would have wanted a Sydney final test, but like Watson their ability had declined whilst their ego stayed inflated. I admire his records, but do not think he's been a team player. Should have always taken No3 when Pointing retired, but preferred the softer ball at no 5. I didn't think much of that. Then there was dressing room issues, disharmony over player bonding and distancing himself from selections.

Clarke's time is over. Savour the Ashes, but Aussie cricket will improve once they bond as a team under a new captain and fresh faces.
