Bit of a bat conundrum!
« on: August 28, 2015, 11:10:16 AM »

Hello all,

New member here.  After an 7 year hiatus, I have very recently got back into cricket and am loving it (shame the season ends soon).  I've played one league 1XI game and have another on Saturday.  Unfortunately, I sold my Kookaburra Ice Sub Zero a while back and am therefore batless.  In my first innings I borrowed an old Slazenger V800 that was an absolute plank which resulted in me getting caught at mid-wicket off a full toss that should have really gone for six.

I'm therefore looking to purchase a bat - possibly second hand or new if possible within my current budget.  I'm not looking for a long term match bat but something to see out the last couple of games and cover winter nets duties.  I used to have subsidised bats from Newbery (played for Sussex as a junior) so will probably go and pick up something from them at the start of next season (the H Mjolnir I had was an absolute gun bat).  My budget for this interim solution is therefore small - £80 - 100.  Weight wise I want a bat between 2lb 7 and 2lb 9.

I have been keeping an eye out on ebay and have put in a cheeky offer for a E41 LE that I have seen.  I doubt it will be accepted but it was worth try.  Hopefully, you guys may have some other options/advice for me!

Thank you.

I think Red Ink will custom make a bat for forum members for somewhere near that budget?

That could well be an option.

The three off the shelf i'm considering are:

The Assegai 3*
Somme of the Morrant bats.
GN Powerbow Strike (not particularly keen on these - were always bought by the lower team sloggers back at School!)

Trust me, this thing must have been 15 years old.  It had a middle the size of a penny piece.

decide which stickers you like the most from a forum sponsor and give them a call and see if they can help you.

If you like newbery bats - I do suggest you give Blank Bats a call as you may end up with a similar product for less money which would result in a higher short term outlay but release you of the need to buy a second new bat...

Clearly on here that is a terrible suggestion as any proper member has a match bat, a spare match bat, a net bat, a wet weather bat, a new bat they are just knocking in, an old favourite bat that they still like to use and another bat just for the hell of it at the very least.

The equation for buying bats is as follows:

X=Y+1

Where X is the number of bats needed and Y is the number of bats currently owned.

Assegai 3 Star
If you're not keen on that then GN do decent looking sticks at the lower end of their range, Asad at UZI would be more than willing to help out with some photo's (and some others I'd imagine)

Hi guys,

Needed the bat for tomorrow so went to my local intersport today - have known the owners for a long time. To cut a long story short I walked away with a Gecko G2 for £110 reduced from £175.  Lovely bit of wood and pinged and tapped up better than every other bat (Puma, Adidas and kookaburra) bar a Salix which was £250.

Bat looks massive yet is only 2lb 9. Nice low middle as well which I liked on my Mjolnir. Very happy.

Thanks mate. Pics don't really show it properly. Nice bit of wood - few knots but to be expected at that price point. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.
