A pleasure to play
« on: September 21, 2015, 08:01:22 AM »

OK, so there are grumbles about our opponents on here - but how about the sides that it's a particular joy to play, where the game is played in the right spirit and win or lose they are very gracious and sociable? Let's name and fame them.

Plenty on Sundays, but then you'd hope they would be in friendlies!

In the league, Winterbourne were a pleasure to play against this year - their senior players (including the owner of Vantage cricket) play in a great spirit and were generous in applauding good play from either side, regardless of whether they were on top or under the pump at the time. Although their opening bowler did start doing somersaults after bouncing out our number 10 haha.

Surprisingly, our local rivals Egham. Historically there has always been a load of unnecessary needle between the sides, but this year it was a really pleasant, exciting game.

It helped that we played them on a minefield and they thought they were well on top, bowling us out for 105. We got them 9 down before they got over the line, but throughout there was much jovial banter until perhaps the final couple of overs.

A refreshing experience.

There are a few in the Thames Valley thankfully - Windsor are always a decent bunch, as are Princes Risborough and Theale & Tilehurst.

I would be struggling to name one match from this season which has been played in the right spirit apart from a knock about game of sevens.  I play a reasonably high level and so teams invariably want to win but over the last five years of so I have observed that both the quality of cricket and sportsmanship has declined considerably.

Steyning.  Always a good game against them and they are local rivals. They always have a drink and a chat after the game.  They always like banter during the game.

From my Surrey Championship days, Normandy were always a good bunch of lads (when Junior Simpson and Dave Jones were playing). Later on, Pyrford played in the right spirit (shame, as they have had to pull out of the 1XI league this year).

Springhead CC, arguably my favourite away fixture (although I missed it this year due to not being selected).

we can only really be talking friendlies in our league and it's got to be Harpsden CC in Henly. One of the nicest grounds ive played in, good cricketers(apparently they have a youngster from Western Australia who clocks 85mph playing for them), fab teas, lovely setting and a beer after the game.

Who do you play for mate? I used to play for the staff team at Royal Holloway so played quite a few local teams like Englefield Green, Egham and Chertsey.

I like all the teams in our League, Saturday and Sunday.

Cleethorpes are probably the only team that still sledge, no one likes them in Our league

Pretty much everyone this season. The teams who have been a little aggro are the exception to the rule. I particularly like playing against Hornsey, North London, Twickenham, Wembley and West Harrow. All lovely guys who play the game the right way.

Ha no way, I used to also play the odd game for Thorpe, do you remember a game against them back in 2008 when some poor blokes Achilles went off like a shotgun and we had to have an ambulance brought out onto the square as he couldn't even bear to be moved? Does James stock still play for them?
