I can't believe how many of these stem guards are getting sold. £50 for a bit of plastic to attach on the back of a helmet. If people just kept their eye on the ball it wouldn't be a problem. Wasn't long ago that you could get a whole titanium lid for about £80. I find it pretty shocking how manufacturers are ripping people off on the back of a poor blokes death- should come as standard

Did you not see Levi get hit in the Ram Slam?
He was hit by a throw from the boundary. Accidents happen, stem guards may help prevent an accident becoming a tradgedy.

Yes I did. I can appreciate that accidents happen and these things can reduce the risk to some extent, but for a supplier to charge £50 for that small piece of plastic is disgusting

£50 for a potentially life saving piece of plastic, disgusting or not I can see why so many have sold (and I bought one myself, along with a top of the range helmet).

Do I really need a £200 Masuri with a stem guards?  No
Will having this kit make me a better player? No - but I'll feel safer
Is it wortg it? Yes - if it takes a blow that potentially saves me from a serious injury it'll be worth it's weight in gold. Better safer than sorry in my opinion

It is a form of TPU that has never been used in injection moulding before, combined with military grade crush foam.

If you are looking for cheap plastic used in helmets. Have a look at the shreys. The plastic grill mounts on the side are made of the same plastic as your average smoke alarm. I haven't seen many in the flesh, but every single one i've seen has cracks in the grille mount pretty much fresh out the box.

Ok so maybe a bit more to it than a bit of plastic. Still reckon there's £50 there?

Initially I was a little skeptical about the price and did not feel they would be terribly popular at approx £50. Like many things in retail, if they don't prove popular the price will eventually be forced down, but customer demand has been high and we've just restocked on the stemguard for the second time since August, very unusual for a niche protective product out of season.

That's bad to hear about the shrey, I was thinking of getting one since I tried on the Masuri VS and found it really uncomfortable for some reason.

Slightly changing tack, surely stem guards will only be an interim retro-fit solution to a fundamental design flaw in all the current helmets?  It's laudible that Masuri & Shrey responded so swiftly to the Phil Hughes tragedy, since the current helmet standards (even BS2013) doesn't do anything to address neck protection.  But surely it won't be too long (a couple of years perhaps) before manufacturers come up with a helmet design with properly integrated neck protection equal to the stem guard which doesn't excessively restrict head movement, a clip-on guard can't be the long-term solution?  In the dim and distant past there have been some designs which have covered the neck more, pre-dating the original Albion riding-helmet based design, check this out...

Any manufacturer's insight on this @Ayrtek?
