Well....from the articles I have read the debt is so big there and it's just being replaced by more debt-whether that's local council money or ecb loans.... At some point you have to ask if long term they can keep going.Sadly the answer looks like they cannot-there's just not enough money coming in.
This is not the European Central Bank propping up Greece,counties without tests or international matches are very much at a disadvantage...to get a test match you have to bid stupid money and upgrade your ground-a vicious circle.
Cardiff only stages tests because it has essential public money from the Welsh assembly without that they would be stuffed too.
A smaller championship has to be the way forward,personally I think counties should merge geographically.
In 2002 my club had enough money for one more month-so we merged with another club
What's the difference in what some of us clubs do and the counties?

Because at that level, players need to practise every day? In fact, they play most days.

Doesn't need to be the same players like pros, even if they used 100'diffwrent ones in a season. For one year it could happen. That would save a million or 2 which looking at the losses would put them back on track in one year. Did 2 after all isn't that good and they lose anyway if they pay pros and go out of business

All the counties get big money from the ecb-that's one of the reason all the chairman backed the Stanford money-all 18 were getting a pay out.ignore the fact any quality control check would of shown he was a crook
Get a bad feeling when he turned up in a helicopter with a million dollars in a plastic box? Yeah me too

But as sad as it is I think Northants will go bankrupt.the only option may be if they own the ground and sell it....a lot of people in charge are property developers.

But at the end of the day I honestly think at least some counties should merge,can't see any other way....
Northants and Leicester? Is that so hard to imagine?

Hailing from Northants I wouldn't go to Leicester to watch cricket so tbh, you might as well not merge and just let those that can't function without handouts die

That would be absolutely dreadful. I'd rather end it tomorrow than go down a slow torture route.

Cant check right now but i think the ECB gives something like �40m to the counties out of the �100m a year they get from sky. This props up the smaller counties by generating 50% or more of their yearly revenue. Nearly all would be bankrupt without it.

Million a year at least on wages (when you factor in all the silly age group,youth, girls, women, disabled etc etc. no need for coaches, analysts, fitness etc. they'd be paid off their debts within two years and could build it all up again.

Surely worth a try if there are amateurs willing to play for free. Once it's gone, it's gone . It's not like a county in recent times doesn't have previous for losing all their games for years.. Leicestershire or Derbyshire was it?

That's right the TV money is cut up and given to all counties,everyone gets a slice-it's not just Northants.
It just happens they are in a worse mess than most.I believe Kent sold off some land as they have been in trouble too.
Think it's looking a bit better for them now.
If your not going to have international matches another use needs to be found for the ground -corporate functions etc.
County cricket....aside from a few rich ones...needs a rethink.
I feel more Northants fans I really do,but the writing looks to be on the wall-sadly

You simply can't run an unsustainable business. During the 80s/90s these counties had no sky money yet somehow managed to balance the books. Now they can't even get close and it can't all be down to player wages being brought up to a decent living wage. The ECB has a duty to pay counties some money to produce a first class setup capable of developing international talent but that doesn't need 18 counties to do that. Australia manage with 6, SA similar and those two teams are arguably the best in the world.

People mostly don't watch the championship because they are told it's boring. And because no-one else watches it (a self-fulfilling prophecy). The narrative of a championship match is usually pretty similar to that of a Test match.
