How to stop the bottom hand taking over
« on: January 20, 2016, 08:39:03 AM »

Morning all,

We had a out first net session last night (was great to be back) however, all winter I've made conscious efforts when playing mirror cricket to play with a stronger top arm. I felt like last night I was ready to give it a blast, but naturally the bottom hand came in to the shots and my top hand weaker and arm collapsing. (Playing with broken wrists)

Any tips or advice please?

Cheers

Squash ball in your bottom hand glove?
I'm sure that's what Gilchrist did

Doesn't look like the bottom hand is the problem. The top hand looks like it just collapses when you play a drive. Also your front leg has locked out for a forward defensive which won't help you defend what ever your hands are doing. Your shoulder is nowhere near the ball either which makes you open up. When your shoulder goes to the ball everything else has to follow.

Some drills are just putting a ball down (Outside off in a half volley position) and stepping out next to it leading with the point of your shoulder. Do this a few times and then step out again but this time hit the ball. Progress to under arm throw downs and then over arm etc.

I've worked on this over winter as I always been a bottom handed batsman. Two things which have helped me are:

1. Head first in line of the ball
2. Holding the handle extremely loose with the bottom hand. Just the thumb and first two fingers wrapped around the handle to support the top hand

Bat a bit. Bowl a bit. Not too bad at point either!

All good advice here Reds, but don't forget it was your first net after several months off. It may just take a net or two more for your rhythm to return and any work you've been doing to start to show through.
Jealous your netting already!
