Best Visibility With Safe Settings
« on: January 25, 2016, 01:11:28 AM »

I have been using Masuri (old style) for past few seasons and find it to be adequate although, at the safest setting, visibility can be a challenge. Also, Masuri moves around a lot on my head. I am looking into Ayrtek and wonder how they fare when it comes to visibility. If any of you have used both, which one due you prefer for visbility. Masuri? Ayrtek?

NZ's McLenaghan hit in the face with an off cutter bouncer. He was wearing an old style Masuri and the ball penetrated the grill. Batsman retired hurt.

I've used an old style masuri, and ayrtek and a new style masuri (and "a few" others...)

Visibility wise the I find the new style masuri the best, but the ayrtek was much lighter and the list iliac was just as good as, if not better than, the old style masuri.

Wow, that is surprising . You would think that with its fixed grill, the new style Masuri would pose visibility issues.

As dumb as this may sound...I've found that with the new helmets (I have the masuri double grill) just focusing intensely on the ball really helps...you begin to look "through" the grill. A bit like how some bowlers look "through" their non bowling arm when the load up prior to releasing the ball.

This is true of all helmets as they take time to get used to having something in your eye line which is why you need to persist with them once you decide to use one.

I only started wearing one in 2013 after being told off by people for not wearing our own design, 10 weeks of winter nets sessions and I got used to looking beyond the grille and now find it part of my kit against all bowling.

Completely agree, the first time you make runs wearing a lid it's never an issue from there on. Still have guys at our club who insist they can't wear a helmet because they can't see out if them. Absolutely ridiculous...

I always have my helmets set with a much smaller gap between the grille and the peak than the size of a ball, so the extra visibility provided by the double bar masuri probably makes more of a difference to me than it would for most people.

i still use one of the old style masuris and with the start of winter nets coming up I got it out to have a look and realised I had it set to the widest possible settings. Changed it straight away to the smallest gap between grill and peak, tried it on and to be honest I didn't notice any drop in visibility, as others have alluded to if you're focusing on a foreign object you almost look through the grill

I pounced on one of Ayrtek's Christmas offers and got a Premiertek Titanium. I used to use an old Masuri. I have worn the Ayrtek in the nets for three weeks and I'm a convert now, particularly after dilscooping one into the gap between the peak and grill and not even feeling it last week! Not so sure my old Masuri would have handled it as well as the Ayrtek did and the difference in visibility between them is minimal in my opinion.

As the majority of International players seem to be using the Masuri, I can't see that visibility would be an issue or surely they would ditch it. Altough having seen how some of the England upper order play maybe it is  :)  :D

I wanted to post this with my initial reply, but have been fighting with photo bucket!  >:(

Here is a comparison shot of my Masuri Elite compared to my Albion, set up as I used it last season.
As you can see the Masuri actually has a wider gap than I had been using! So my views on visibility may differ from everyone else's lol

I must say the stem guard looks like it fits the helmet alot better than the rest ive seen, seems to follow the contours and not look too out of place
