Is this storm damaged?
« on: February 15, 2016, 09:31:33 PM »

Hi lads, bought a bat the other day, and saw these fractures on the bat. Was just wondering if someone more knowledgeable could confirm whether this is storm damage or not?

And through the back too:

The lighting isn't the best, but if you look closely, you should see the fractures I'm talking about. (And nope, I'm not talking about the surface crack in the middle of the bat! :D) The fractures seem to match the description that Streaky used, the thunderbolt like fracture, and some of them go to the back.

It's hard to tell fom the photos but the patterns are correct for wind damage also  storm damage is more Preverlant in narrow grain willow as narrow grains are normally found towards the top of the tree.

Is this a used bat?

Yup, has been used for about half a season from what I've been told!

Generally they are decent lookers too, I've yet to see an "ugly" SD bat.

Just an observation of mine.

Eagle eyes, as expected from the maker of my current favourite bat. ;) I hadn't even noticed the split shoulder - this bat shall be returned!

Out of interest Matt, do you know if aggressive drying can also cause storm damage like symptoms?

Ditto, always have been great lookers. I got a Ricochet 250 off Uzi, which had been hardly used, more than 12 grains, stunning, only for it to split beyond repair. :-[ I'm almost certain there are ugly ones out there though!

Unfortunatly it's a fault in the tree , the split on the face is a give away also

That looks like a bdm.
It will be hard to find these defects when the bat is brand new and you just get a few pics from seller.

I was wondering if this has Storm Damage as well? It looks similar to Chad's bat. I'm struggling to get the right angles to show it properly but there are multiple marks throughout the blade so I'm leaning towards storm damage:

I have no idea though, so thought I'd ask.
