One of our youth coaches posted a link to this last night on our cricket club page and I'm glad to report...

Yes I am, left handed but bat and play golf right handed so too hand is the dominant one. I've always argued this was the best way of doing it so your power is from the top hand whilst bottom hand adds control/stability.

I've been saying this for years as it seemed so logical to me, that said its because I am LH but then bat RH (thanks dad! Only way he knew).

I'm right handed, bat right handed but play golf left handed. I'm **** at golf which doesn't necessarily support this theory and batting left-handed feels unnatural although I dare say I could time a few

Hussey - Throws/bowls right, bats left
Clarke - Throws/bowls left, bats right
Hayden - Throws Right, Bats left
Langer - Throws Right, Bats left
Gilchrist - Plays tennis right handed and I think he throws right handed, bats left handed.
Stokes - Throws/bowls Right, Bats left
Finch (not the greatest example) - Throws left, bats right
Warner - Throws/Bowls Right, Bats left
Sangakarra - Throws/bowls right, bats left

The list could go on forever, but those are a few that come straight to my mind.

Makes sense that you should have your dominant hand on top though, rather than have the dominant hand on bottom and risk it taking over and hitting in the air

Is that because you've engrained the movement patterns for batting RH. What made you learn golf LH?

From a purely technical point of view this makes sense, I'm a merry billy bottom hander and could see that if I'd learnt the other way round I'd have more of a pure technique. Don't think I'd hit it nearly so far though!

I'm throw/bowl right, bat left, golf right. I grew up in Canada and played ice hockey and baseball as a kid. In these sports it's the opposite to cricket. Most right handed ice hockey players play left handed as you want the dominant hand at the top of the stick for control, single handed play etc. Likewise in baseball the bottom hand is there predominantly for power so you see more lefties than righties. It's also beneficial to bat left against right handed throwers as you're pulling the ball with it's natural arc. For cricket I think a strong top hand helps with straight bat and extended shots like the cut when you're a young player.

As for golf I think it's less important because the hands work as a single unit and the feet don't move. Most right handers have stronger left legs as that's the brace when you kick a ball. (This isn't the same as having more coordination on the left leg).

I think we're seeing more cack-handed batsmen nowadays because coaches aren't encouraging right handers to bat right handed etc. My left handed son bats right handed, bowls left-handed, plays tennis right handed, and can throw underarm with either. He's just been encouraged to try whatever feels natural.

I've often thought that this made a lot of sense. Good to see it in the press! I think we need a CBF "back to front" net where everyone goes in and bats not their standard way... That could be a lot of fun...
