Played today despite my ankle suddenly swelling up overnight. Ehhhh. Turn up to the ground to find out the colts of another club have used the pitch marked out for us despite them having their own 20 yard one marked out. Suffice to say we were pretty livid.

Oppo won the toss and elected to bat, they put on 191 in their 40. Dropped a tough one at midwicket, didn't have much else to do. We lost by 30 odd runs, didn't exactly help when opening bat goes first ball to a pee roller. Didn't bat.

4 years ago mate, we had a sharp South African overseas, jeez he was good.

Wasn't Jason by any chance was it? He was very quick haha and didn't appreciate being clipped through midwicket. I'd have played against you more than likely. Where you playing now?

After the fun of playing in London last Saturday, I can't say I've enjoyed playing cricket this week back in Yorkshire as I have had 2 absolutely crap matches where I bowled 1 over in each and the following nonsense.

On Friday evening I posted on Facebook asking if any clubs required a player as I was trying to find a match for my autistic friend. His usual team had a free week and was pleased to get a reply from a York based club saying their 2nd XI were short and it was agreed that I would take him to their ground for 12.15-12.20 as their match was away. Unfortunately I was about 2 minutes late and on arriving there was no sign of any of their 2nd XI players. I asked one of their 1st XI players where everyone was and he answered that I should have been at 12 noon and everyone left over 10 minutes ago. I replied why would they leave early with only 10 players to which he couldn't give a straight answer.  My friend was very upset and I wasn't best pleased either but having contact details for other 2nd XI skippers, I contacted one who play around a mile away and very luckily they only had 10. However they were also playing away but thankfully only on other side of York which ironically is where I had just come from.

As I started to drove off I got the following Facebook message from the person who was supposed to be taking him: "Really sorry xxx there's been a monumental **** up and we already have a full side. Sorry to let ***** down." The time stamp on this message was 12.25pm. However York is a very small place and I have now been informed that after agreeing to take my friend, they were still looking to see if they could get anyone better and did so on Saturday morning.

First weekend back from injury, i may as well have not played.

Saturday saw me play for a team that compete well above my standard. They notched up 180 off all out and we were all out for 94. Bowled 3 overs for 17, first over was a maiden then i proceeded to send down 12 terrible balls and i got whacked. Batted at 9 and was out LBW off 6 balls.

Then on Sunday i played at a level closer to my standard. We were bowled out for 65, for some reason i batted 4 when i'm not a batsman. Out for 2 whilst wickets were falling all around me. Then opened the bowling and got hit for 17 off 2 overs, just could not grip onto the new ball and i just kept bowling half trackers as did our other opener. Then about 8 overs in the ball was fine to hold, wish i would have asked to bowl first change now!

All in all a terrible weekend

Already beginning to be perplexed by the mix of standards in our Surrey Championships 3rdX1 league.

This week we bowled out Cobham Avorians 3XI for 31 in 20 overs. We were strong, but not awesomely so, they were very, very weak. we knocked it off for 1 in 7 overs and the game was finished by 3pm.

Now I'll take the points, as I've been b*mmed in this league many times by stronger sides over the years, but not by this margin. This is the second team we've bowled out for under 40 in 6 weeks, and I think our new league re-structuring may take a couple of years to settle it's standards. What's sad is it's only 1 team going up, which is a bit short sighted bearing in mind the wide difference of abilities in the league.

It's also a bit frustrating, as it's not giving some of the youngsters time for a decent bat or bowl to bring them on, which is what playing in this side is all about.

Ho hum, probably have a humdinger next week when I'm in charge!!!

On another note, our 4XI had a disgraceful game against Malden Wanderers on Saturday. In a 90 over game we posted 191-9 off 46 overs - Malden than responded by posting 41-7 of 44 overs!!!!!!!! Their no.3 getting 8 not out from 117 balls!!!!!  I mean really - what is the point of that on a Saturday afternoon, particularly with a bunch of kids involved!

actually....does anyone else's scorers log the number of balls faced at their club? we got a young potential star at 13 who loves scoring for us

He loves IPL and ever since the balls are being logged everyone is obsessed with scoring rates

I got 39 of 56 balls last week which I though was great and the youngster proceeded to tell I am 'far short of the requirement'

great to see a 13 year old with such self confidence.

perhaps they were after bonus points for not all out? (I don't know what rules you play to).

Fortunately I wasn't in that game, as my natural grumpy tendencies may have come to the fore.

I did, however, manage to sledge one of the oppo as an umpire. One of their chaps who had got a golden duck, and had had a couple of his long hops despatched during his brief spell, started mouthing off to our young opening bat. I mentioned loudly to him that

"I know it's hard to keep your mouth shut when you are getting shagged as hard as this - but why don't you give it a try?" - all accompanied with a winning smile" :)
