On another note, our 4XI had a disgraceful game against Malden Wanderers on Saturday. In a 90 over game we posted 191-9 off 46 overs - Malden than responded by posting 41-7 of 44 overs!!!!!!!! Their no.3 getting 8 not out from 117 balls!!!!!  I mean really - what is the point of that on a Saturday afternoon, particularly with a bunch of kids involved!

I've faced this kind of obstacle a number of times so I bring on a total non-bowler to serve up a few overs of juicy deliveries and he's usually ended up with 3 or 4 wickets. Bit of friendly banter telling the batsman he could get his first ever fifty and be on the league website I find also helps. The biggest problem is usually the following week when aforementioned bowler thinks he's coming on first change and mentions around 20x how many wickets he got the week before.

After 6 wins from 6 we went away to 2nd in the league hoping for a competitive game, that was a mistake.

90 over game as we lost 10 due to the giant hole in the covers and lack of willingness to mop it up. their whole attitude was the same throughout the game.

We declared on 257 after 45 overs, pretty good score with a slow outfield and accurate bowling, I managed 56 but got stuck and whacked one up in the air. we thought they would at least attempt to chase it and bail out if we got into them, what happened was a complete waste of a Saturday. their skipper came out to open with a face like thunder and proceeded to block everything, considering the amount of verbals we took from the idiot while we batted he made himself look a little foolish and got a huge send off when our umpire gave him out on 21 from 44 overs.

they ended up on 149-5 from 45 - mainly due to us throwing a few pies to try and buy a wicket.

Games like this even more emphasize the need to scrap timed games and go 50/50 all season.

im looking forward to the return fixture to see how they play it when they have to hit the ball off the square

I had a wholly new dispute with the opposition this week - while I was bowling, their skipper was backing up so much down the middle of the wicket that he actually collided with me as I was completing my action! Turned round expecting an apology or similar and was greeted with 'what, I can stand where I want'...! Said nothing, waited till he was facing and knocked him off his feet with a bouncer, incredibly disappointed that he didn't fall on his stumps! Couple more fended off his face and a dropped catch behind later and he poked a slower ball straight up in the air, celebrations were loud. Especially as he gave a no ball for height that was barely above the knee when their no3 got caught, what is wrong with some people.

8 off 117? Would pay good money to watch an innings like that.

My ankle has now swollen up like a balloon and I've had to go home from work because of it, FML.

Jesus - I had shouts of being "rather defensive" after striking 55* off 60 balls, with the openers coming back into the attack to finish the innings shortly after I got to the crease.

Definitely happier with that than with 8* off 177. Not coming through that wall today!! What a todger. I'd have run him out!

Bottom played top at the weekend for us... and yep were bottom. Big club restructure, people out of the club, some people in so its  season to rebuild.

Wicket - soaking wet. Oppo had covers but someone had put them on the wrong wicket earlier in the week so this one was still drying out.

Lost toss and in we went to bat... after lots of dressing room agreements that front foot was the way our opening bats proceeded to get peppered on the arms and chest off a length!

Our opener(who has been out of touch) eventually put on 71 in a pretty good display, decent contributions from a few with an eventual no 10 appearance from myself with a quick fire 12 not out before the no11 left a ripper from the spinner that came in and smashed him plum on the pads. Shame as tbh i was seeing it really clearly. 171 all out which left us 4 runs short of full batting points but more than we all hoped for at the start of play.

Now remember they are top of the league... and we were into them quick with an early wicket. After that the game ebed and flowed and we took wickets at the right time to restrict them... it then seemed like they decided to see it out or play for time.

time and time again i just don't get this time rule... we played a 55 over game and when we eventually came off the field at 8 because thats what the bowling team do.. we had bowled 68 overs i think.... i just don't get it. They were 149/9 i think. Yeah the additional overs gave us a chance to win it but it also didn't incentivise them to go after the total.

We are still without a win but it was a good day for us and for the club..there were 9/10 people available for selection over and above what was needed. Some people missed it out but from a position of fielding 9/10 players at the start of the season its a definite better place to be.

Already beginning to be perplexed by the mix of standards in our Surrey Championships 3rdX1 league.

This week we bowled out Cobham Avorians 3XI for 31 in 20 overs. We were strong, but not awesomely so, they were very, very weak. we knocked it off for 1 in 7 overs and the game was finished by 3pm.

Now I'll take the points, as I've been b*mmed in this league many times by stronger sides over the years, but not by this margin. This is the second team we've bowled out for under 40 in 6 weeks, and I think our new league re-structuring may take a couple of years to settle it's standards. What's sad is it's only 1 team going up, which is a bit short sighted bearing in mind the wide difference of abilities in the league.

It's also a bit frustrating, as it's not giving some of the youngsters time for a decent bat or bowl to bring them on, which is what playing in this side is all about.

Ho hum, probably have a humdinger next week when I'm in charge!!!

Well I suppose if they know they won't chase it a losing draw is more pts and more interest than getting out hitting ??
