As much as I would like to try out the xp80 and some other Aussie gray nics, the side in the exchange rate, combined with shipping and duties is making these somewhat unaproachable.

The dollar has strengthened in the last couple of weeks. The current price at 1000 aus comes in at 468, after removing the tax (rate 1.92) say 40 for shipping, the vat on entry is 20% plus import duty and handling charges, going to end up around then 600 mark. I had 2 from the stable last autumn when the dollar was weaker and the prices were lower, but for me I would struggle to pay that, stick to the uk and wait for the exchange rate to swing.
Obviously others don't have the same issue and good luck to them you and gn.

When did they start charging VAT on entry? I know the customs charge can be a bit hit and miss but I was unaware they had start adding tax on.

That's what the "Custom's charge" is I think.
My Aussie import had VAT, a handling fee and an additional Parcel Force "just because we can" fee
