How to repair shoulder crack/prevent it getting worse
« on: April 10, 2016, 11:22:39 PM »

Hi,

I recently bought a bat from Ebay but only noticed this crack in the shoulder recently once tape on the bat was removed.

It extends about 2 inches down the bat.

Is there anything I can do to protect this area and stop it getting any worse/seal it up/repair it, at home?

Am worried it'll crack properly if I get a ball up there.

Thanks!

In my experience it's hard to fix without being invasive. That being drilling a hole back to front and inserting a peg. Worked like a charm for me. But I don't like the idea of doing this to a pretty Bat. Is it a JP Gavan?

Thanks very much for the replies/info.
I'd be happy to have it repaired, but wouldn't want it too disfigured by the repair (vain I'm sure that sounds!).
Yep it has been a very disappointing saga as the tape was not removed until recently, which was over the 30 day ebay period as I didnt touch the bat until recently.
The bat was described as 'New: other' and had this plus a dent on edge of bat.
I will contact WalkingWicket37.

Seen this many times don't do anything invasive such as forcing open the gap to insert glue wait untill it gets worse just tape tight with bat repair tape.
You will know if it's gets worse as the handle will flex or vibrate.                                                                                            The crack as probably occurred due to the handle being to tight in the vee

ive had exactly the same issue on an ebay, there's def some people looking to offload newish bats with this damage, it's a nightmare to fix.

Cam(walking wicket) is def a good shout, he's very good on this type of thing if you do want it repaired

first thing I check now if I get any bats off ebay is potential shoulder cracks, they are a nightmare to fix properly

Thanks for everyone who's praised my repair skills. Always nice to get a compliment.

This is a tricky one. I'd be inclined to contact the seller and ask for my money back as they've clearly sold it knowing of the break, and tried to hide it with tape.

If you want this repaired properly the stickers will have to go I'm afraid your best bet is to cut the handle out, repair the shoulder then put a new (better fitting) handle in.

If you want to save the stickers, you could try injecting some glue in to pack it, or get some glue in there and clamping shut but, as stated above, this will just be a case of prolonging he inevitable.

WalkingWicket37: thanks very much for the useful info and also your helpful PM. Been a bad buying experience for me, as the seller clearly knew about this, but didn't mention it or a dent in the side of bat, despite selling it as 'New (Other)' despite me messaging him for over 6 weeks to ask him about it.

Will think about the options as go one with of the options you advise.

Thanks again for all the info from the respondents in this thread

I had a lovely lovely bat, big, many grains and it flew. Bat went similarly after 3 months.

The maker took it back, cut out the handle drill glued dowels clamped in a order that makes sense.

They then refitted a handle.

I used for another half a season, and then sold to our big brute of a skipper. 2 years, 1000 runs at a strike rate of 140 including about 100 plus big sixes and it's still going strong.

So then can be repaired and repaired well, just depends how much effort you want to put into repairs.
