nice juicy full toss / half-tracker
« on: April 21, 2016, 07:30:08 PM »

You're batting against a spinner or a really slow Chris Harris type bowler. You get a nice juicy full toss and/or a half tracker. Your eyes light up and you smash it out of the ground for an easy six.

Easy.....well, not for me! For some reason, I really struggle to smack these out of the ground. Am very comfortable pulling/hooking seamers, but when spinners drop it short, I can't seem to get that big powerful pull going. And full tosses are a mystery...I can easily punch them down the ground, but can't really hit them out of the park. Really weird problem to have, but any advice would be great.

Then I'm stumped.

On a more serious note. Head and shoulders into the ball. Remember watching a feature on Sky Sports not so long ago when Nasser spoke to Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow about range hitting. Maybe Buzz has he video in his masterclass thread. Check that out.

We did range hitting tonight, half volleys went sailing over, full tosses went from dropping short of long on, to probably being caught by the bowler.

So yeah i struggle to.

Other lads, well lew hit two full bungers in a row Atleast 15m passed us on the boundary edge. So he's got the power.

I'd presume a lot of wrist and forearm strength is needed as bowl is still on the way down, especially when trying to hit straight.

yeah its a mystery alright.. I have gotten good at using my feet, getting my head into the ball, and hitting half volleys, and length balls...but full tosses just don't go anywhere.

and the slow half trackers...I'd like to hit them well into the stands, instead of swatting them away for 1 or 2 (I've  had to play it safe of late, after being caught on the boundary a few times off some really atrocious half trackers).

Hitting a full toss can be hard as we are programmed to practice hitting balls that have pitched.
The key is to know the field and know what the bowler is doing so if the full toss does come you can hit a low risk shot to the fence.
You can take the baseball slugger approach brace yourself front leg and extend your arms through the shot, but unless you are expecting that it may be difficult for you so your best bet is to try not to hit the ball too hard and put it in a gap.

With a long hop, rock onto the back foot know where you want to hit it and put it there, use the power of your bat and time it.

You can practice both with some tennis ball feeds.

All about timing and hand speed as much as brute strength.

All about cleanness of contact, full tosses are obviously clean onto the bat and aren't gonna lose any pace off the track etc, so calm down, brace your leg like Buzz says and get your hands through it and they're easy to send a good distance.

Just to re-iterate Buzz's point, its all about timing. The phrase "sh*t balls gets wickets" isn't heard without reason. So often people see a bad ball and as you rightly state, their eyes light up and look to dispatch said rubbish into next county losing all shape, timing and it seems ability.

Just like any other shot its about training the brain, practise hitting bad balls into particular areas (then you can adapt come game time depending on field placement) but when you start, begin by hitting the balls at 25% power, then 50%, then 75% before eventually putting them away with the authority you would hope to in a game without losing shape or timing - if you do, go back to the start and do not collect £200. This will develop another shot(s) to your repertoire, dispatching a rank bad ball is not about the blade travelling aimlessly at the speed of light but timing the ball with control as you would with say a wide half volley or the pull that you said you play well against seamers.

Just because its a toilet ball does not mean you have to play a sh*t shot! Hope this helps. If it doesnt - then i would suggest a complete overhaul of new batting kit!  :D

I have the same problem sometimes, I think you need to remind yourself that bad balls will come from a slow bowler at the start of each over so you aren't as surprised.

The other thing about hooking and pulling a spinner that I didn't think about until a coach pointed it out, is that you need to open your body up by getting your back foot back and across and your front foot towards leg to get a full swing at it.

When I do get surprised by it and don't have time to adjust to smash it I just defend it, no point forcing it and getting out. Just like hooking a fast bowler, if you are not in a good position, pull out of the shot.
