Compo looks to be on the way out I suspect! He is still not performing still so interesting to see how long they stay with him?

Don't get Compton at all.  Talks all week about how he's not Lara, or his Gramps, or Hales or Stokes, says he's happy being the grinder, then goes and does that.  Again.  Whether it's his technique or his head, he's got to be done by the end of this series...

Does Hales have tape on his boots to stop his pads squeeking?

Oh Nick.......why ?? why ?

I think there's no truer saying in cricket that batting is in the head.....I really feel for the bloke.

as I said to one of my muppet team mates the other day: 'If batting was that easy you would be getting 50 every week, you're not''

sorry but it had to be said.

Very impressed with Hales this morning, his judgement has looked good. Credit to him after how he went in the SA tour

Ok - not that I am writing Compo off just yet, but it's not looking great for him!
So with Hales looking as though he is starting to settle in to his role a little better in this series, and assuming that Compo doesn't suddenly hit a double-century at Lords, then who would be the next to jump into the number 3 spot?

vince I think bats 3 normally for his county so maybe worth a go if he can get some runs as im sure we can find another middle order player even moving jonny up and bringing butler back in but no.3 is a tricky postion for England as since trot no one has cemented it

The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

Interesting stat from Andrew Samson:

"Nick Compton has 109 first-class runs at 15.57 runs this season. He hasn't got a fifty in 14 innings, since his 85 at Durban."

There were rumours that he was for the chop prior to the start of the season but in losing Taylor, they didn't want too much change so stuck with him. I'd have thought he'd be lucky to get another game now unless he does something in the 2nd innings.

he was publically backed by Farbrace prior to this test. I think he will get the next match as well,
We can't be too quick disguarding players, if you get picked in the first place there's a reason. If you trust the judgement of the selectors you have to back it.

To be fair to the selectors in recent years, they have got a lot right. Heaven forbid we go back to the 80's when just about everyone was playing their 'last innings before the chop'

without wishing to start off a aussie in England/IJC/GerrySA style ruck on a Friday afternoon, Ian Bell ? if England make a change that is....... :) :)
