Thames Valley Cricket

Heading down to Ascot to work for at least a year as a teacher and wanting to find a club down there. Want to play at the highest standard I can as I'm only 22, but want to know what the standards like in the Thames Valley league. Does anyone know the strength of it? I'm a keeper bat and ideally want to keep as much as I can, Wokingham seemed the best club close to me but Michael Bates keeps there so I will not stand a chance ha!

Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, cheers!

@Batbuddy99 is your friend here, as I believe he plays in this area. @Mpt7 may also be able to help.

The Thames Valley league is massive, with a large travelling area.

You would also be very close to Egham CC and Englefield Greenn CC who play inb the Surrey Championship, which is a more compact and very competitive league with lots of standards.

You are also only 15 mons from my club - Chertsey CC, who are truly awesome, and always on the lookout for Keeper - Batsmen :)

The thought of playing in the same side as Brucie is certainly worth a 15 min drive, would be amazing cricket watching the Cat in full flow at No11 and cleaning up with his in duckers

As a little plug for my club (Royal  Ascot), we are due to finish second in div 2b in the first time we have ever been in that league, and our first team is also quite young and in need of a keeper! Our 2s are also likely to be promoted next week and our 3s were just of a promotion spot, all this after last season all of those sides won their divisions last year.
Secondly @Mpt7 s Wargrave also play in the same league, and having netted with him I'd say he's pretty decent bat, with some mighty fine H4Ls
Wokingham are a big club with a quite new facility and 5 teams, so can cater far a large range of abilities but apart from that I can't really tell you much about them
Finchampstead 1s just won the home counties prem(?) At the first time of asking, with their 2s winning div 2a this year, and that is a very young side, with 5 or 6 17 year olds playing in the 1sts this year

In short there is a large variety of decent sized clubs in the area, oh and Ascot just raised over £1000 yesterday alone for our clubhouse project in our first inter-club 9-a-side tournament (with yours truly hitting the winning runs in the final😇😇😇)

 I've played a load of games at Wokingham.. Lovely deck and outfield.. Changing rooms etc are very leisure centre like but modern and spacious. I'd be one I'd look up in the area. Not a village tyoe ground though so depends what you're after.

the standard of the tvl is pretty high especially in divisions 1 and 2 and it feeds into the home counties which is the highest standard of club cricket here, some very good teams competing here, henley, finch, slough, banbury to name a few
finch winning the premier was a surprise as no one expected it, but i think the major reason was their overseas saffa jandre coetzee, hes taken over 300 first class wickets and was outstanding this season
theres plenty clubs to choose from with some lovely grounds, wokingham also one of the nicest iv played on
@Batbuddy99 slough are currently above royal ascot and will finish 2nd if they win their last game but hats off to royal ascot, they've had a great first season in div 2

Cheers for all the info fellars, seems like there's an abundance of clubs very close! Seems like I may have to wander around the clubs during the winter and have a few nets! Royal Ascot do look like they've done very well this season! Think I may have to email Michael Bates and get some coaching sessions over winter, a ridiculously good keeper.

Ah OK @raza147 I haven't looked at the table since Henley won the league
Henley themselves are also a very good club, as it was their seconds that won that league, however you would expect that as their 1s are pretty much all paid

@Sivlar13 I play over at Hurst in the TVL we have teams in Div 2 and Div 6 of the TVL. We hold our own most seasons and push for promotion most seasons. Could be a good option for you?

I'll give a plug for Marlow. Minor County track and excellent facilities. 3 teams,  1st Xi in Div 1. @pistol101 is the man to speak to.

I think most people have covered it all. TVL is a very strong structure feeding into the Home Counties League (which is the top clubs from TVL and Oxford leagues).

It really does depend on what your standard of cricket is like. I play for Marlow and our 1st XI are in Div 1 which is a fraction below minor counties level. Lots of ex pro's floating around. We have Jeremy Batty (Yorkshire and Somerset), Jamie Bovill (Hampshire) and Steve Sylvester (Middlesex). Add in 3 Bucks players. No overseas this year but we had a Zimbabwean A player last year. The difference in playing standard between Home Counties and TVL Div 1 is pretty big at the moment. The drop between Div 1 and Div 2 is big as well.

There will be a lot of division changes this year due to the Home Counties relegation. So it'll be 3 relegated in half of the leagues (and 2 up).

Wokingham is a very nice club, purpose built a few years ago. Excellent teas! Interesting choice for them to have Michael Bates and Dan Housego (Gloucs) as playing club coaches rather than an overseas. I'd imagine they were disappointed not to get promoted. Will be interesting to see if they do it again. Both of them didn't play at the weekend.

There's a right mixture of grounds and facilities. You also need to be careful that if you miss out on the first team that you not playing a very low standard in the seconds. Lots of home counties sides have their seconds teams floating around division 2. Let me know if you need any advice. We have keepers coming out of our ears in our first team at the moment.

Ascot 2s got promoted, so next year we will have sides in div 2, 4, 6 and 8, so perfect for people of any ability next year!
Also we have good camaraderie throughout the club, with players from different teams regularly mixing together in Sunday games, the inter-club tournament and the annual 3s vs 4s game this Saturday!
