yet he's still better than Mike Atherton.

Not from what I have seen. Atherton does at least provide some insight.

Australia , we need to be honest .....we lost a lot of good players in the last 18 months , we should have looked to the future/rebuilt the side a bit starting then . Having not really done that we're in the same position now .
If we want experience in our batting order then I think Cowan opening is better than Voges at 5 , and we could get more seasons out of him .
We should stop using makeshift /converted openers like S.Marsh and Burns - if they are good enough to be in the team it should be in the middle order . Why is Bancroft so out of favour ? Why is Hanscomb not really on the radar ? Is Warner an option at no3 ? Should Maxwell be playing less limited overs stuff so he can find his long format batting mojo ?Furguson is probably not the answer to anything but at least M.Marsh isn't at 6 .
Our bowling stocks are actually rather poor if you don't count the perpetually injured Pattinson and Cummins . We need to look at M.Marsh at 8/third seamer or blood some new quicks (not Mennie) . Siddle too often is as threatening as my grandma and Hazlewood is decentish but quite overrated.
I'm at the point where I think we should get Wade back in for Nevill to boost the batting , even if it means him keeping like Sir Dropsalot .
Lyon is our best spin option but he prevents picking options that help the balance of the side ( O'Keefe,  Agar ).

Cowan , Bancroft , Warner , Smith , Hanscomb , Burns , Wade , M.Marsh , Okeefe, Starc , Hazlewood - for the remaining home tests this season .
Cowan , Bancroft , Warner , Smith , Hanscomb , Wade , Maxwell , M.Marsh , Agar , O'Keefe, Starc - my team for the 1st test in India Feb 17 .

And yes , I'm aware the selectors and everyone else will think these teams are crazy .

O'Keefe has a test batting average of 11. So Rod says he can't play  ;)

Unlikely to be any play on day 2. It's a shame after yesterday. SA won't mind finishing their innings tomorrow in the sunshine

Thank god Rod Marsh is planning his retirement. Maybe then they can solidify the team, give guys like Uzy a chance to settle in, drop pathetic cricketers like 'Garry' Lyon, tell Mitch Marsh to dust off his WA uniform on a permanent basis, tell Mozzie Henriques to spend his time figuring out how to get St George a first grade win rather than picking him on national tours and tell guys like Handscombe, Bancroft and some of these exciting youngsters from SA and QLD to get ready for the next Aussie tour.

How about

Warner
Bancroft (WK)
Khawaja
Smith
Handscombe
Stoinis
Zampa/OKeefe
Sayers/Paris
Mennie
Hazlewood
Starc

Nevill has been a liability with the bat. Have a look at the SAF and ENG keepers in comparison. Additionally, I'm not sure why Ben Dunk dropped off the radar after an incredible season last year.

Dunk has scored 99 runs in his last 9 matches, Zampa averages 50 with the ball in first class matches, Bancroft has hardly shown any form to be selected, Handscome has scored a 60 and 78 and little else this year.

Hang on you are a perfect choice as an Aussie selector

Handscombe is averaging 49 so far in the shield after finishing 3rd highest run scorer last season at 43.5.

You can take your pick throughout the country for better options than Nevill and Lyon.

Last year means nothing... that's almost a year ago.... you need to pick on form not past history.

As for Lyon he has 213 test wickets from 58 matches... not bad in my books

Arguably the worst test line up in 3 decades. Something needs to be done.

Having seen Handscombe and Bancroft in as our second overseas the last two seasons, surely you have better players out there? Both were distinctly average in county champ div 2.

Nonsense, Nevill is very good player but hasn't had much of a run with the bat, he couldn't get a stick last summer because Smith and co were scoring plenty and since then seems to be going in at 5 for bugger all. The rot starts at the top with all this high performance unit rubbish " managing " players etc. there is more coaching, more support staff and more resources than ever yet performance is the worst I have seen in 25 years. Nevill is the least of our issues.

It could always be worse! If the ashes were this Winter then I reckon Aus would be in big trouble!
But I suspect that you'll pull it all together over the next year or so and get a very decent team together
