GN Predator Pro 3 Duffle - review
« on: March 01, 2017, 05:18:04 PM »

Have any forum members got their hands on one of these? Been waiting excitedly for them to actually come out as they look like a cheaper version of the Legend with more pockets, which I like, but no-one has come out with any useful review photos or videos beyond the stock GN shots. Keen to see as I've just spotted they're on flash sale at one retailer until tomorrow, is there anyone out there who can help out?

I had one on order, but was bagless at net time, so went for an alternative.

Yep will probably just go for it anyway if it comes to it tbf, stock photos of bags are bloody useless though. Damn, had you in mind @Alvaro when I made the thread, never mind! Did you go for the legend?

So I went for it, and pleased I did! Here's a brief review for anyone who cares, pretty happy with a couple of small negatives.

Outside:

It's obviously not a small bag, but a shade smaller than most of the recent massive offerings so a nice size in my opinion, you'll not struggle for space but if you want to take keeping gear and spare everything it might not be the best choice. Back and straps are really well padded, seriously impressed with how comfy it is to carry. Helps a lot that even fully loaded it feels very light. One small negative - the waist strap bits really aren't necessary, don't see myself ever using them so why are they there? Two mesh pockets for drinks bottles or lunch, nice touch.

Main pocket:

Plenty adequate but not massive - this is with pads, lid, batting gloves, thigh pads, box and keeping gloves - as you can see there's room to spare on top for some more gloves/whites etc but what's in there is quite snugly packed in. I can squeeze in a set of keeping pads as well, but it is a squeeze - fine for occasional keepers but probably wouldn't want to jam  them in every week.

Extra pockets:

Bats - space divided up for 3 bats, pretty well padded on both sides. The dividers attach by velcro on one side - for no good reason as far as I can see as they're stitched in on the other side so can't be removed. Swallows the biggest bats I've got no problem but is a little snug around the Nemesis so might be a bit of a squeeze if you're wanting to get 3 real monsters in there.

Top pocket - not the biggest, would fit a towel (as here) or set of whites nicely, batting gloves, something like that.

Front pocket - decent size but not very deep, I've chucked some arm supports and inner gloves in there with loads of room to spare.

Side pocket - tunnels into the main section, plenty of room though so could fit plenty in here, again gloves or whites or whatever.
One confusing thing - where's the other side pocket gone?! Stock GN photos all show pockets on both sides, is this a manufacturing error and why they've been delayed so long? Isn't just mine as the IJC review shows only one too. Not the end of the world as there is enough storage elsewhere, but I'd definitely have preferred the extra pocket.

Boots pocket - excellent, loads of room and a ventilation window. Swallows a pair of size 12s no problem at all.

Verdict - lovely bag, good value when compared to most other big brand offerings. A really nice size, will take everything your average player needs and very comfy on the back. Silly waist straps removed, missing side pocket reinstated and a dedicated valuables section somewhere and it'd be almost perfect, but as it is I'm pretty happy.

What do you reckon the pick of the small duffles is? I realise it is blasphemy here but something just big enough for a bat, gloves, pads, strippers, helmet, box would more than do me for nets...
My vote goes to the Slazenger V series. I have 3. In the sports direct sale I think they were £6.50.

Really good write up.

Just of the old school drawstring ones? They're much of a muchness tbh, pretty much every one out there is the same dimensions and material so just choose either the cheapest or the one that has the extra pockets that you prefer! Definitely go for one with proper external pocket/s though, the ones that tunnel into the bag are just a black hole - not good when you're trying to find your change/car keys at the end of a net!

Edit - the other half has just bought the junior version of this bag and that would also be an excellent choice I think, would probably fit a bare basics adult kit.

Did you get 3 of them taking into account how quickly the Sports Direct bags fall apart! ;)

No, personally I've never had any issue with the sports direct gear I've bought. I had a yellow/black one for about 2 seasons and found it ideal, so when the newer ones went on sale I got a new one for me and one for my daughter. Though now, my daughter has too much gear and has taken my mongoose duffle (world's worst duffle, worlds best colour).

Great review. It looks like an improved version of the Supernova which itself is a great duffle.

The Supernova has two straps so you can carry it like a normal bag which I found not to be needed. What was missing was a second grab handle. This one has done away with the straps and included the second grab handle plus an extra 'pocket' at the top. Is this running alongside the Supernova? I'd prefer your Pro 3 tbh.

If you are using a car for transport to nets/games , or only a short walk via public transport , then the waist straps aren't really necessary.  But if you have the bag on your back for quite a while it's nice to do up the waist straps nice and tight , make them load bearing / carry most of the weight on your hips , and give your shoulders and back a rest by loosening the the shoulder straps  . Ijc review seemed to miss the point of this , only focusing on the straps helping the bag not to move from side to side .
Watching the review from ijc , the main thing i was thinking was 'where's the other bloody side pocket'! Does seem weird , and a rare , small blemish on an otherwise great looking duffle .

@edge that sounds like just the thing, thanks. Bit nicer than a single strap canvas bag but not so big I might as well use a wheeled bag. Ta!
No worries! Is a lovely bag to be fair, I'll pack hers up with mens kit to check it fits.

I'm sure it will be fine. My small mens pads and youth gloves are quite child sized anyway  :o
Ha one benefit of being short, smaller kit! Popped some of mine in before I saw you'd replied and it even holds proper sized pads ;)
