Need motivation
« on: March 17, 2017, 09:06:54 PM »

My team like to huddle when we get to the field and try and motivate ourselves for the task we have set ahead... But, the huddle is about as good as it gets!

The same dribble gets said every week, "back the bowlers", "encourage everyone" ect.. To me this seems very negative

Back the bowlers - 'i've just spent the last 14 overs steaming in into the wind up a hill, now im fielding long off to long off, how much more do you want from me?'

Encourage the fielders - 'ive just dropped a dolly the last thing i wished for was the loud mouth to shout, "chin up, lad!" as i try my hardest not to be explicit as i stand 2 feet away from the umpire'

Many scenarios I've been in that each of the huddle comments make me chuckle.

Is there anything people have said or have listened to thats properly geared them up to give 150% after you've just got a golden whilst your team has been bowled out for 105?

Words are meaningless, if there is a plan great, do you trust the skipper bowlers to do the plan?
People get peed off when the game meanders.
Players will always drop catches.
Cricket is an individual sport played with other people. You have to motivate yourself in whatever way works for ypu.

Heard a captain say this to his team after batting first and scoring about 400 :
Right lads now they are down lets kick them in the head.

Best motivation we used to get was when we had to play away games in Luton (To give you a clue of the area we used to get motorbikes coming across the outfield) A new Skipper took over and decided to promise us a team takeaway on the way home if we won. We'd not won in Luton for 5 years before that and went on to win 5 games in a row following the promise!

He was fairly out of pocket by the end of his captaincy!

By way of food or beer.. Hmmm tempting, but as you said out of pocket... Now not so tempting? I'll have to think about that one

Anybody who treats Cricket as an individual sport will have no place and not welcomed in my team. If you want to be an individual go and play golf, darts etc....

Leadership takes many forms but I have a question if it not a individual sport at times.

How do you motivate a player whos having a bad patch yet your winning.

Your telling me you just tell him "it's
Ok we are winning"

Team ethos is ok but you have to have greater flexibility with individuals as everybody is different and needs to be treated as such.

My theory is cricket is a very focused individual sports and if you bring the best out of individuals your team will be in a much better position.

I have always said individual performance and team performance go hand in hand

This! Not having the feeling of having to perform helps, @19reading87 somehow take some all the pressure off especially in the field, not having that pressure is motivation enough, also being part of a side where someone finds that 1 performance helps, and drives us (me anyway) to be that guy

So when I go out and open the batting against the overseas pro, who can I pass to? Who can face that ball for me? No one I am on my own.
And while I am at it, no one can bowl that ball for the overseas pro, he has to turn up from ball one and try to knock me over.

There is a difference between playing for yourself or playing for the team. I think you are mistaking what I am saying for this.

Never been much good at the rousing words in a huddle but I'm always a fan of giving people roles in the team, tend to find players respond well to being given a responsibility, whether they're one of your key players or someone making up the numbers.
Best example I can think of for someone upping their game is in a school game years back I put a lad who I'm sure wouldn't mind me saying he's a pretty average cricketer/fielder out at deep square, but before putting him out there I told him I'm going to bounce the oppo's best batsman as I knew he'd take the hook on, you get out there on the boundary and be ready for the catch please - I know you'll take it for me. Plan worked perfectly, he took the catch and was clearly chuffed he'd been given the responsibility, then played like a hero the whole rest of the game.

Inspiring people to elevate about there skill set consistantly is not going to achieved by communial words, but individual responsibility if done correctly is the the sign of inspirational leadership.

There no right way but plenty of wrong
