I'm currently living in the US and was having a conversation over a beer with a friend who works for one of the big football helmet manufacturers. He was asking about scope for technological developments in the cricket helmet space and we were spitballing the market size (i.e., number of helmets sold each year). What are people's estimates? I was thinking in that UK alone that you've got 900K players, 450K probably own a helmet and replace every ~5 years? So 90K helmets sold annually in the UK...

Anyone got any better ideas? I felt sure someone on here would have an answer

Vast amounts of difference in terms of market size depending upon who you speak too.....SD told us they sold 30k per year of their Slaz helmet when we saw them back in 2011-12.

Others who used to work for an Aus brand said it was alot less than that per year even as one of the 2 big brands in the market back then as they were more than happy hitting 6 figures at a push.

No one really knows the real answer as the reports that are produced dont drill down into specific numbers as the helmets sales are typically grouped into the "protection" bracket that includes other products as well.

I assume after the Phil Hughes incident few years ago, the quantity of helmets sold must have gone up. I personally don't like wearing helmet but I have started to wear one after it myself.
