Suggestions for bat collection
« on: August 25, 2017, 11:34:40 AM »

As with many of you, after spending a month reading this forum, I think I’ve acquired the malaise of wanting to buy more and more bats, more bats that I will ever use in a lifetime (or do the bats justice and score mountains of runs) but still, the bug to possess a handmade English bat of each maker is too strong.  Some of these brands even use the same bat maker and yet, I want one of each.

So, I did the right thing and first admitted that I have a problem (of sorts).  I came clean to my missus and she seems supportive – she said your money, you do what you please – then she says, just get me an iMac and a Louis Vuitton bag and we’ll call it even (still negotiating on this).  She also suggested that perhaps since I’m turning 40 this year, I’m experiencing a mid-life crisis and perhaps I feel like collecting some toys.

So I decide to embrace the madness, we put a budget on it and she’s given me permission to indulge as long as it’s within the budget and once I’m done, I really AM done.
In order to increase the number of bats I can buy, I’m more than happy to compromise on grade.  I’m happy with Grade 2 or Grade 3 as long as performance is good and it pings like a trampoline.

My absolute required specs – no compromise:
1.   Full, convex profile -absolutely no concaving
2.   Mid or low-mid sweet spot
3.   Fully dressed weight (with grip, toe guard but without scuff sheet) – between 2lb 8oz to 2lb 10oz.
4.   More wood in the hitting area – so don’t mind slightly shorter blades and more wood taken out of shoulder and toe (duck-billing for example).
5.   Cost – preferably below £200.00

I’m hoping to make a priority purchase list in that order.  I hope you guys will indulge me and perhaps help with the order or offer comments on bats, makers, acquisition strategy (direct to maker or use an agent such as IJC, TCB – custom shape or off the shelf shape), your personal purchase experience with the maker, etc.  So without further ado, let’s get to the purchase list.

Purchase list:
1.   B1 Blank Bat – Performance grade
I already have a B1 in the Players Grade but want another one.  I’m thinking of using the hand-picked option of IJC.

2.   Hunts Caerulex – Already have a Super Selected custom one, so this is crossed off the list

3.   Phantom Bats – Custom Dark Edition profile or Custom Illusion fuller profile
Again, wish to use IJC’s hand picking if possible.

4.   Garrard & Flack – Stock Original

5.   Aldred – Butterfly (not sure which profile has low or mid-middle which can be made in a fuller version)

6.   Salix Pod – Alba or Selected grade
Again, wish to use IJC’s hand picking if possible.

7.   H4L – not sure shape which is the full profile

8.   B3 – 1 stripe (again, not sure which profile is full)

9.   Chase Finback R4
Again, wish to use IJC’s hand picking if possible.

10.   XX Cricket bat – not sure of which profile
Again, wish to use IJC’s hand picking if possible.

11.   A Robert Pack bat

12.   JEDI bat – a James Dollive bat
Perhaps using TCB’s custom option

13.   Ryan Kelsall

14.   Red Ink

15.   Vulcan Bat

16.   Helygen Bat

17.   Redwood

18.   Charlie French

19.   Elite cricket

20.   Choice cricket bat

21.   Mighty willow bat

22.   Black cat

23.   Charlie French

24.   Vyper bats

25.   Python bats

Honourable mentions (either because of cost or lack of knowledge of maker):  Bulldog Cricket, Affinity Bats, Solitaire Cricket Bats, Heritage Cricket, Titan Cricket, Aedos Cricket, Woodstock Bats, Pryzm Cricket Bats, Willostix Bats, Fat Bats, Wombat Cricket, Mars Cricket, Duncan Fearnley, Redback Cricket, Hawk Cricket, Bear Cricket, Stallionz Cricket, Affinity Bats, Vantage Cricket

Like the plan! Fair few I've tried on there, fair few I haven't and would like to as well. Not sure I'd place too much faith in IJC handpicking though... Where are you based?

A few pointers on stuff I'm most familiar with:
the Chase - Finback is the heavily concaved model so you may want to revise your choice there, Volante would suit your requirements well?

Aldred makes everything to order so can always ask him to tweak concaving etc for you, Prestige or Silver Sovreign would both fit well though I think.

B3 make maaaaaany shapes, their website is a good place to start with the bat models on there.

I'm in London.  I don't trust my ability to gauge bats and ping, so I reckon IJC will be much better than me at it.  Also, I've met the chaps there a few times and I found Chris and Paul very likeable, so if they can help me, why not steer some business their way.

Thanks for the Chase suggestion.  I wasn't too sure on which of the Chase profiles was full.  Not sure what it is about concaving that bugs me but does it ever bug me.  The only concaving I found tolerable was on the Blank Bat B4 and the Mighty Willow Sapphire.

Contact @Blank Bats direct, you won't be disappointed. I can highly recommend the Hulk profile, as will @Buzz , which will definitely meet your requirements of full profile and mid low middle. This reminds me that I need to do a review of the one I got recently.

I also have a H4L Custom which was sourced from Jake @Vitas Cricket which has the perfect shape you are after http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=37215.0 Bat with the black grip

@BatGoonMcClintock for Aldred you can try the Velocity Traditional profile. It is full convex with Mid-lo sweet spot. Just make sure to tell Paul that you need 2-10 finished & fully dressed weight as he will try to push you for a 2-13 bat that will pick up like a 2-10.  :)

Not sure whats special about IJC's handpicking? Plenty of retailers out there who go to batmakers/suppliers and choose the bats they stock.

I've seen IJC on social media recently saying the Salix Pod bats they have in a convex profile are somehow special or unique to them, and yet here we have some Pods and an SLX in stock at Vitas Cricket that are completely convex.

Pod Select 2'10, Alba 2'9. SLX Select just under 2'9.

I know you've already mentioned it, but a number of the brands you've listed are just whatever has been flavour of the month on the forum over recent years. Only a few in that list truly make their own bats, most share a small pool of white label batmakers, with a lot of them i'm not sure how many bats you'll find at that price that are completely domed/convex. All H4L bats are very full, very little in the way of concaving, but none of them are convex. As @JB has mentioned you can get anything you want with the H4L Custom model, but not for circa £200 unfortunately.

With many of that bats/brands you've mentioned who use the same maker, you maybe better served (and often you'll save money) taking advantage of this offer that we provide from the same maker: (not implying every bat in the list is made by Hunts, but i bet it's more than people on the forum think)

Pricing may have changed a little from what you will read in those posts, some of which are old. Our two most popular grades are G1 £200 and G1+ £245, no extra charge to visit the maker and have it made in front of you. If you cant visit i am happy to go on your behalf, choose the cleft etc and arrange the bat to be made to your needs.

We have precious little else in stock right now that would fit the bill, its the time of year when we are looking to run down our stock to prepare for new season arrivals in October. At any time of year I can arrange something to your taste as above from Hunts, as a Focus model for one of the batmakers we use for Focus, from Salix or H4L, and if you wallet is significantly deeper than £200, from Gray Nics.

Hi @velvetsky01 , Thanks for your offer.  Can you PM me some pics and a price indication?

Hawk bats made from stratch to your specs inc handle Black Cat made by some say the UKs best batmaker have bats from both and they are excellent.

Hi @Seniorplayer , thanks for your suggestion.  The Black Cat is on my must have list but like the Affinity, for the current purposes, it's just too pricey and out of range as they don't have the handcrafted options for a lower grade bat at a lower price point.  I do want an Aldred butterfly but I am aware that they can be bottom heavy and can come in heavier than your specs, so I will specify the weight and pick up explicitly.

Contact @Blank Bats direct, you won't be disappointed. I can highly recommend the Hulk profile, as will @Buzz , which will definitely meet your requirements of full profile and mid low middle. This reminds me that I need to do a review of the one I got recently.

Thanks @JB , I did contact BB direct for my B1, I will definitely look at the B1 and the hulk profile.  My thoughts were since IJC deal with BB and are in town, I could ask them to handpick and knock my bat in as well.  Please do a review of your recent BB purchase.

Your H4L bats look to be beauties though much heavier than I'd like.  I was thinking of the 50-50 or the Warbird profiles but I can't really justify an extra £200 for the custom option for not taking off a few mm of wood from the middle.  I might just live with a slightly concaved Warbird.

Hi Jake @Vitas Cricket, many thanks for your reply.  I did want to give you a call this afternoon but had to step out for work.  The Salix bats are just fantastic in the full profile and those are on my 'must have' list.  I already have a G1+ custom hunts from Tony.  I do think it's worth me having a chat with you to see if I can weed out some white labels that are made at Hunts.  Yes, I will keep it a secret.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, I don't think I can justify another £200 for a custom H4L to save a few mm of wood in the middle, so I might just get an Off the shelf Warbird G2.  So for the Salix and the H4L, I would definitely like to speak with you.

As for IJC, it's the only shop I have visited personally so they are the only ones I know personally who handpick though from reading this forum, I know Vitas and several others do it as well.  As long as I get good service, honest feedback and great bats, I'm happy to patronise any store.

I'd lose one off the list if it was me Jake @Vitas Cricket and get a Custom every time

As mentioned above, I can't justify the extra £200 for a few mm of wood.  I've spoken to a few of the makers on the list and they were happy to customize their closest shapes to full profiles.  I will, most likely, get an off the shelf Warbird.  Your suggestion would make sense if I were getting all 25 but I will likely stop at 10 as the 11th might be used by the missus to bash my head in.  So like the Affinity Carbine, the Black Cat, the White Willow and the CP bats, the custom H4L will have to wait for a future time.

Point noted @jd163 , many thanks for the tip.

You have a very extensive list there. I have 2 Aldred  butterfly's, a Supreme at 2lb12oz the other  in the sovereign profile only weighs 2lb10oz.
I have 3 Affinity carbines weighing between. 2lb 7 - 2lb 10oz. Nice bats.
No complaints with my h4L NV and my custom red ink is absolutely fantastic, These bats are outstanding value for money.
I have a bulldog paddle bat which is ok.
Good luck with your hunt. The collectiing is the best bit I think.

Hi @Gurujames , I'm definitely not getting the entire list, I'd have to skip retirement then and work till I'm 100 or worse, use these bats as firewood to keep me warm when I'm 70 or something.  I will look to add a Red Ink which is value for money as is a Jedi bat to go with another Blank Bat (either B1 or Hulk) and the Phantom and I'm definitely looking to add a Salix after seeing the post by @Vitas Cricket and and may also get an off the shelf H4L Warbird.

I do agree that the collecting is the best part and perhaps the first few uses.  I took my BB to the club last week for a game and no one had heard of the brand before and it got rave reviews (for the look and tap with ball) from nearly everyone.  I got a few drives away of the middle (thick outfield so didn't get any fours for them) and whacked a full toss through square leg for four (before running myself out) to satisfy myself that the performance matched the looks.  I do tend to be a bit nervous for the first few uses as I'm wondering if it's been knocked properly.  My BB's edge on the inside toe was chipped in a non-club game I played at the previous week and my new Hunts had seam marks after a net session despite my knocking it in, so still ginger about use.  I always take my old bat with me just in case I need to swap.

I do want an Affinity Carbine at some point along with a Black Cat and a White Willow bat.  Just out of curiosity, which of your bats are match bats and which would you use in which match situation?  Like for instance, you're batting at No. 6 with 10 overs to go, which bat do you reach for?  Or you are opening in a timed match, batting second with 55 overs to face, which bat do you take out to the middle?
