GM QDK Players Edition, XXX-11 Handcrafted and a few others
« on: November 02, 2017, 08:17:59 AM »

Hello folks, with nothing to do at work today, I thought I'd do a review of the bats I bought this year(not in chronological order). I bought quite a few in total, some for myself, some for others. I was looking for 'THE BEST BAT' money can buy, and in that search bought a handful of top end bats. At no point I was interested in keeping all of these bats, I was just searching for THE ONE.

The purpose of this post is to help people like me who don't have access to these bats locally and have to buy online, for them to have an idea what to expect in terms of shape, handle, performance etc.

I will start with a slightly detailed review of the three bats I will be keeping, and less comprehensive reviews of the ones I have let go. The three that I'm keeping are the GM Quinton De Kock Players Edition, GN XXX-11 Handcrafted, and GN 50+. Reviews to follow.

GM Quinton De Kock Players Edition

Weight: 2.10.5
Handle: Thick, very slightly oval at the bottom hand. The handle is thicker than the Chrome Limited Edition bat I had. Best handle shape in my opinion.
Profile: 35mm edges, 64-65mm spine. The bat has a long middle, due to the high spine from the handle to the toe.

Review:

The bat was purchased from Vitas Cricket a few months ago. This is the best overall bat I have, and the second best in terms of ping, second only to the GN 50+. But it wouldn't be fair to compare the two, one is 2.10.5 and the other is 2.14. When I received this bat I wasn't too impressed by the shape/size. I expected it to be much bigger being a player's bat. At that time I thought bigger equals better, at least in the same grade of bats. Bounced a ball on it only to be disappointed further. Bat seemed hard, although the rebound was pretty good if it makes any sense(same as the chrome LE). Certainly seemed too hard for a players edition. All these negative thoughts went away as soon as I did my first throw down with it. Didn't knock it in at all as it says ready to play(big mistake), did a couple of throw downs and went to open the innings. Scored 38 off 21, and even though the bat did sound crisp the ball absolutely flied off the bat. Keep in mind the bat wasn't knocked-in at all. I'd suggest people to spend an hour or two on the edges and the toe, as mine has a couple of small surface cracks along both edges.

Some people on here have this bias against GM that they're pressed too hard and take too long to open up, and to be honest my first impressions were the same having only bounced a ball on it. I'd suggest these people to try it out in practice or a match and I'm pretty sure they will be converted. As a comparison, my XP80, CA Players edition, and NB LE bats took way longer to reach their peak and involved a lot of knocking and playing in. GM was taken straight to a game.

GN XXX-11 Handcrafted

Weight: 2.8.2
Handle: Very skinny, oval throughout but more pronounced at the bottom hand.
Profile: 44mm edges, 70mm spine. Super-flat face, concentrated middle. Mid sweet spot.

Review:
I purchased this bat after the QDK bat. Having not tried the GM, and not too impressed with the size of it(LOL) I thought I'd sell the QDK to finance the XXX-11. It ticked all the right boxes - Light, Huge profile, Kranzbuhler made. It looked like it could be THE ONE. Anyways, received the bat a couple of weeks ago. Very impressed, a little bit of knocking has made the response much much better and it will only get better as has been the case with my other Aussie GNs. I have done one net session and played a 21 ball innings with it so far. The ping is NOT as good as the QDK, but is still good for a new bat. This will be a keeper too because of the pick-up, size for the weight, overall feel of the bat and the confidence a big bat gives you. I'm positive the response will only get better(not that it doesn't tap well now). If I had to choose between this and the GM, I'd take the GM as the ping is far superior(as of now).

GN 50+

Weight: 2.14
Handle: Skinny, oval throughout. More pronounced oval at the bottom hand.
Profile: 52mm edges, 76mm spine. Sweet spot everywhere.

Review:

I bought this bat last year. I also did a review at the time, just thought of doing a follow-up here. In terms of ping, this bat sits at the top. Obviously at 2.14, for an opening batsman, this isn't an ideal bat however good the ping is. I switch to it when I've scored 40-50 runs and need to accelerate further. I only play t20 cricket so the switch is usually done at the 10 over mark if I'm still at the crease. If you're a middle/low order batsman, and have the strength to wield a bat at this weight, you will score a lot of runs and hit a lot of 6s. Even the mis-timed, toe-end shots clear the boundary.

I completely concur about the feel and usability of the GMs. The ball flies off mine.

Great post and envious collection mate  ;) Is the qdk bat regular SH or short blade? I was a GM fan before until last couple years when they introduced the thin handles but the ping performance is second to none across grades..

It’a a regular SH. The handle on the QDK is the thickest of all bats that I have. Like proper thick. The handle on the Chrome limited edition is similar in shape but less thick, it’s still thicker than all the other bats mentioned above.
