Moeen Ali on his bat
« on: January 26, 2018, 04:47:05 PM »

For those who may have missed this.
And apologies if this has been posted already.
Looks like Moeen's a bit of a bat badger!

He says that bats are "...a little bit softer when they're two-toned."
Not sure what he means - but if he's saying that heartwood is softer, then that's not the received wisdom of the CBF forum!

It's 'softer' and 'it pings a bit more'? Hmm, maybe Moeen is talking a load of tits and know more about hitting a ball than he does about willow ;)

FAKE, all the pro bats got sold to punters so poor Moeen has just ended up duped with an off the shelf bat and a bit of sharpie handiwork!

If we take this "softer press" literally, then yes I agree.

But I think,in the majority of instances, when this phrase is used, it refers to the "feel and sound" of the ball response off the bat, through the handle.

You're right I reckon!

This quite impressive in itself as, on current form, he could write what he knows about hitting a ball on the back of a postage stamp...

I might be totally missing the point here, but I've always believed that a bat is either pressed properly, or it isn't.

Every bit of wood has an optimum range pressing wise, which is where the skill of the batmaker really shines through from my experience. I've had the odd request for 'soft/under' pressed bats, but have always just advised that all bats are pressed to the expert opinion of the batmaker(s) - at the end of the day they know what's best!

Yes you get bats that are 'hard' and 'soft' pressed, but surely these are just another term for 'over' and 'under' pressed? Please do correct me if I'm missing the mark, but that's always how I've been led to understand the pressing debate.

Is soft pressed possibly another (poor) way to say overdried/low density and likely to fly the die?
