Has Stokes had a wee rethatch while he’s been away, or does his bald spot just not look as bad with a buzz cut?

First time I got a good look at Santner was Somerset v NZ back in 2015 and he batted up the order and looked very decent
(Didn’t bowl much from memory) it’s not surprise he can bat a bit.
The lad that looked great was Wheeler - what happened to him?
As an aside the whole team were awesome blokes and during the rain took a bat off young son and all signed it.

Just saw the side, wonder if Hales is starting to regret that white ball only contract...

If it's a choice between Hales and Bairstow, then it's a no brainer that Hales should be in the XI. Bairstow filled his boots again the most atrocious Windies side last summer. Hales has been a key player against the better sides.

Your right it is a no brainier, but the other way round to you have it. Fast forward to the WC here next year we won't be able to get hales and bairstow in the same side, and billings probably won't get in either.

Root and stokes are essential players, Jason Roy has shown he is an awesome player on his day.

To be quite honest with you, and I don't expect you to agree(I like your posts you are 'direct and opinionated') Malan should play ahead of Hales, he is a far better one day player.

So yes, no brainier....Bairstow is a different class to the Goon.

I don't understand what Hales has done wrong TBH. He lost his place due to injury iirc? And he averaged over 50 in 2016. So he was at the peak of his powers. Whether he's a plonker or not, I think we win a lot more matches with Hales in the side.

Yeah...get that. If you base selection on the fact to win the World Cup, we are going to be playing the best of the best and it's going to be hard, that's a given...I don't believe pitches are going to be in our favour so no home conditions.the ICC pitch doctors will be over here making sure the visiting teams will not be disadvantaged, the very best batsmen need to play for us, the best temperament, the best technique, etc.

So a test class batsmen is what we want.in my view of course.

Up top we need real class, yes it's a hitters game with power players like butler and Morgan, but we also need class.

I still have the slightly old fashioned view at the top of the order you need at least one of the two capable of defending high class bowling

Hales was unlucky, in that Roy replaced him when he was injured and did enough as to make himself undroppable.  So Hales ends up being the guy who misses out when the inevitable problems of how to fit seven into six comes around.   Is he being unfairly treated in that?  No, he isn't.  Would he do a good job if he came in?  Probably.

There is perhaps an argument that it is Morgan's captaincy that is keeping him out.  As a pure batting line up, Roy, Hales, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler probably has the edge.

So i will throw this out there....

If Bairstow is going to play, he should be keeping wicket.

He is a better keeper than Butler... I actually think Butler's technique  is now getting worse (I am a keeper) as seen in today's game when he snatched at a catch and stumping.

Plus add to that the flip side that I think Butler is a better outfielder than Bairstow! Because I am not for 1 second suggesting Butler should be dropped.

Long term Butler will also become Captain.

Interesting thoughts.  I do wonder if this is now the case - it wasn't a year ago, but Bairstow's keeping has improved and his catching in the outfield dropped off, just as Jos has made the same journey in reverse.

It does open up another possibility, which is that Buttler replaces Morgan now and Morgan is forced to get in the team on form.  You could then have both YJB and Hales.

Kane Williamson doubt for the 2nd ODI. It will interesting to see if Wood has recovered and whether Hales can get back into the team.
