Moving up a standard- mindset change?
« on: May 22, 2018, 09:11:33 PM »

Hi guys

So, I've had a decent start to the season- batting at 3 or 4 for the second team, and scoring runs relatively easily, I've had bad to back 50's and should really have converted both to 100's but managed to get myself out. I wouldn't say either dismissal was caused by 'good bowling'.

This weekend, I'll be playing in the first team. I think i will be batting somewhere between 5-7. I know I'm good enough to play and score runs in the 1's, but I am slightly nervous and obviously want to take my chance and try and cement a place. My question is- when going up a standard (4 divisions) do i need to do anything different? I know the bowling may be better and a bit quicker/better spinners/fielders etc. I feel i've been batting with freedom, strike rate about a run a ball, do I just carry on with a 'see ball hit ball' mentality or reign it in a bit?

I have played at this standard before, but as a bowler. Following a break from the game of a few years, I seem to have become more of a batting all rounder. I probably will bowl but i'm not worried about that as I'm pretty consistent.  I want to score runs, which is the reason i've been called up!

Thanks!

Don't think about it too much, the standard won't be much stronger, but there will be more strength in depth within the team.
Well done on your call up.
Walk to the crease like you belong and be positive in defence as well as attack and enjoy yourself.

You have been picked on merit and you belong.

yeah the standard will be better, the bowling will be tighter and you might not get as many "freebies" but you will get some. Just be confident and dont change anything in your technique - like others have said you have been called up on merit so enjoy it.

A piece of advice I usually give our younger players when this happens to them is, look through the last few weeks of league scores.  You will always see players who you have played against, and thought yourself at least as good as, doing well int he higher levels, so start with the mindset "if X can do it, then so can I".

I agree with everything said above .
Also think of it as a win-win-win situation.....bat like normal , youll stress less/not at all , your mind won't be cluttered , and it will give you your answer in the process as you'll soon see if you need to just carry on as normal or tighten anything up .
A lot of the jump up a grade is mental , take that burden off yourself and you're half way there .

You’ll be surprised at how little the jump actually is as a batsman.

The bowling will give away leas freebies and you’ll get the odd bowler that is quicker than you are used to but that’s about it.

For me the difference going up the leagues is how the batsman don’t give much away and the old “(No Swearing Please) gets wickets “ becomes less true.

Cheers guys

I regularly face the 1st team in the nets to be fair, and although it is more difficult, i think the main reason is the lack of sight screen in the nets and picking the ball up late. And we probably have the best bowling attack in the league. Hence my apprehension.

But yes, clear mind. See ball, hit ball, hopefully score a few runs!
