I saw an interview with Gavaskar once where he said the key to playing spin well is to judge length quickly, and commit to whichever foot you're playing your shot off absolutely. Effectively he was saying it's all about your feet, but that if you commit to the wrong foot, adjust from there and defend, don't ever try and change your mind or get caught thinking about it.
