I don't mind it as like I say I love fielding but yeah it's not much fun for the openers I imagine.

Luckily (sort of) for us, he has a propensity to lose tosses that defies all probability so often the decision is taken out of our hands.

As a captain I find it can be difficult to keep some of the top order engaged in fielding whether you bat or bowl first. Bowl first, and they are too busy thinking about batting to worry about backing the bowlers up, field second and they have already had their bat and can't wait for the game to finish. The nightmare scenario is when you end up with a batting line stuffed full of guys playing for themselves.

^ I actually field better when fielding second because I don't have to conserve my energy for batting/running-between-wickets.

Also, you shouldn't expect benevolance/chartiable sense of duty from the top order towards the team all the time. We are people too with finite energy and physical ability.

I guess I come to it as a former opening bowler who now plays as a batsman. Bowling fast is infinitely harder work than batting ever can be so the least those guys can expect is for the rest of the team to give it their all in the field. No batsman would be impressed having to bat with a bowler who refused to run at all between the wickets on the grounds that they needed to conserve their energy for bowling.

This. If you think fielding is hard work you've never played as a seamer on a hot day and flat deck!

The maximum quota for a fast bowler in our league is 8 overs in a 40 over/side one-day game. As an opener, I have carried the bat a few times and have had many blistering innings lasting more than 8 overs, hits and running between the wickets. Either it evens out or batters do a lot of donkey work than bowlers (8 overs max - 48 deliveries of varying pace).

Love fielding, prob illustrated by the fact I get put in at long off to long off most weeks when our spinners and military medium bowlers are on as that�s where vast majority of catches come.

I�d like to think I�ve got a safe pair of hands but am widely known to only use my left one most of the time ✋ as old age is creeping up on me at the ripe of age of 36 in sept I don�t throw myself around in the covers as much anymore and a ruptured rotator cuff wiped out my ability to ping it in from 70m at least a decade ago but it�s fun none the less.
